Meet Geoffrey Calhoun

Today we’d like to introduce you to Geoffrey Calhoun.

Hi Geoffrey, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It all began with a bet. I had a friend who was an editor on a Saturday morning kids’ show. He was interested in screenwriting and wanted to motivate himself by daring anyone he could to write a better script than him.

So I took on the challenge and ended up falling in love with the process. I became a student of it, devouring every book, seminar, and online class I could find. Eventually, I did the contest circuit, networking and eventually found success as a screenwriter. 15 years later, I have written my own best-selling book “The Guide For Every Screenwriter, founded a script consulting firm at, and have a #1 International Podcast The Successful Screenwriter. So it has been quite the ride.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Screenwriting is one of the most difficult paths to travel. It is full of hopes and heartbreaks. Everyone has that red carpet dream where you have made it. The reality of it is completely different. It took me a decade before I finally found myself gaining a reputation where people wanted to work with me and I was being sought out. I remember the first time I had a script optioned. The producer did a table read and even began casting the roles only to have everything fall apart. That was tough yet eye-opening. I soon realized that was all too common.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a screenwriter and script consultant. I have been in the business for over 15 years and have founded I am known for coming onto projects and helping course-correct troubled scripts which have run into creative issues. I have even been brought into projects days before shooting and have reworked entire scripts and saved a film. I love doing this. For me being able to help a producer, director, or writer improve a project is incredibly satisfying. It is my life’s work.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Richard Brandes is my biggest mentor. He helped me refine my voice as a writer and taught me the business side of screenwriting. What studios, producers, and directors really look for in a script. I credit him for helping take my writing to the next level.
