Meet Greg Hayes of GBH Photoworks in Costa Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Hayes.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Greg. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My Dad was a photographer for 20 plus years so I actually grew up around it. My first real encounter with using a camera was in high school photo class. I started with 35mm black and white film and learned the basics. I did some photography off and on but never really thought of it as a career. Fast forward 12 years and I was looking for a career change that suited me better than the quality control position I had been in. I have always been creative and needed to make a change. I was fortunate to get a job with a premier virtual tour company in 2013. I traveled to 17 states photographing over 100 hotels. That opportunity really kickstarted my passion for photography as a career and desire to start my own photography business. I took the leap and started getting some work with some big commercial real estate firms in Orange County. As with any business it takes time to grow but I’ve slowly continued to expand since day one. I have gained most of my work from referrals. I now mostly photograph Commercial Real Estate from shopping malls and high rises to medical plazas and fast food restaurants. I’ve always had a love for architecture so it’s great to combine that love with my camera. I feel really fortunate to have found this passion for photography. I would have never thought I would be flying in helicopters and traveling by boat as part of my job. I really do love my job and love being in control of my business.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, yes. I anticipated a drastic pay cut from the beginning and It wasn’t so much about the income but finding a passion. In the beginning, I didn’t have the right equipment and had to make do and rent a lot of gear. Eventually I had enough for a new lens and a new camera body and so on. I was thrown into a lot of jobs thinking I didn’t know what I was doing and wasn’t good enough but this forced me to learn and improve. Being confident in the end product was the hardest part. I think I’ve just figured everything out along the way.

Please tell us about GBH Photoworks.
I am an Orange County based photographer specializing in real estate and architecture. I mostly photograph commercial real estate but I do some residential work every now and then. I’m now providing aerial photos via helicopter. I’m known for providing a painless process of capturing the right images to sell properties. I don’t even think about the angles anymore it just comes naturally. I’m proud of my work and my business ethics. There are plenty of other photographers in my field but I think being honest and truly devoted with providing the best product and service is what sets me apart. I enjoy my work and meeting any of my client’s needs.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Road trips with the family up the coast to Canada every summer. I would love sitting in the cab over sleeper of the motorhome looking out the windows to the giant redwoods and beautiful coastline. I never knew how fortunate I was to see all that growing up.
