Meet Gbenga Komolafe of Kidsclothes in South Central

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gbenga Komolafe.

Gbenga, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been interested in fashion and clothes since I was young. It probably was stoked by my mom’s insistence that my brothers and I always wear matching outfits but for almost as long as I can remember, I took every chance I had to wear clothes that would make me stand out. Since then, I have gone through phases and different aesthetics (some that I regret) but through all of them I have kept consistent to my idea of originality and expressing myself through my outfits. As I grew older and explored different forms of artistic expression like music, painting, and photography, I found fashion as the best form to blend all my interests. kidsclothes came about through my desire for unique pieces that I couldn’t find anywhere and my passion of expressing myself through art.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My biggest obstacle has been fear. Fear of not being good enough or not knowing how to do what i want to achieve. It’s been a continual journey getting over these fears but working to be comfortable in my work and learning that all failures result in valuable lessons and ultimately lead to success has been the key to my growth in not only my business but in my art.

Please tell us about Kidsclothes.
Kidsclothes is a fashion brand and community organization. Through collection releases, fashion shows, and events, we bring together like-minded individuals who embody our ideas of curiosity, individuality, and freedom (kids) to make, promote, and celebrate art. All kidsclothes pieces are 1 of 1 and are constructed from recycled material and thrifted pieces and while that alone doesn’t set us apart from other brands, I think what does is our attention to delivery and our approach to fashion as art form. Unlike many other brands, the clothes aren’t the center of the kidsclothes but rather the whole delivery of each collection; from the lookbook to the videos, to the music, to the launch events, we take pride in telling a story with each collection and, like an intricate art exhibition, sending a pointed message through each piece and as a whole.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I were to start over, I would tell myself to start earlier. I would tell myself to stop worrying about having enough resources or knowing exactly how to do what I want to do because the work I’ve made from just fucking around or learning on the job has been the work that I’m most proud of.
