Meet Gaurav Nanda of Bend Goods in West Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gaurav Nanda.

Gaurav, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I began my career as an automobile design sculptor at General Motors, where I learned a lot about the design process and developed my skills as a sculptor. I came from a family of entrepreneurs and it was only natural that I would try to develop an idea into a company. When I was youngster growing up in the suburbs of Detroit, I would make all kinds of art projects, some of them were even out of wire. I loved the flexibility of it.

Often we would visit Palm Springs and the mid-century décor must have had an influence on me because when I moved into my first home, I wanted it to be filled with mid-century modern furniture. Eventually, I came up with the idea to re-invent wire furniture that originated in the 1950’s. So the vision of the company became to update the concept of wire furniture and offer something different and edgier, with a lot more intricacy that adds comfort to the seat. I spent two years developing the line and took cues from 1950’s sculptor Harry Bertoia’s metal rod chairs. When I launched back in 2010 the reaction was amazing. People love the designs, colors, and different patterns on the chairs. They are surprised by how comfortable they are and impressed that the chairs are handmade with 400 welds.

Has it been a smooth road?
When we first launched it was myself and my father. I am extremely grateful to my dad for helping guide me through the logistics of starting a business, as that allowed me to concentrate on developing our products. I wouldn’t say it was an overnight success, we have had our struggles. It took at least the first four years to really establish ourselves in the Los Angeles design scene. Some people might say that that is a fast rise, but I would say we have slowly and steadily grown to where we are now.

In today’s day and age, it is becoming harder and harder to gain visibility with your product or brand. So the only way for us to grow is to make unique, interesting products and create compelling content.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Bend is on a mission to create wire furniture designs that are superbly crafted and will delight you aesthetically. Our philosophy has always been to design pieces that are equally as beautiful as they are functional. These attributes are in the forefront of our minds as we strive to make unexpected products that evolve with our customers.

Our contract grade and BIFMA tested products are versatile enough to fit into any interior or exterior setting. From a residential backyard to a five-star restaurant, Bend pieces can blend seamlessly into the most modern and/or distinctly traditional of spaces. All of our designs are hand bent and spot-welded using recyclable metals before being electroplated or powder coated with durable and eco-friendly materials. For those who want something a little more unique, all of our products are customizable, in both color and design, for us to help you create a made-to-measure piece for your space.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, Los Angeles has been a great place to start my company because of the indoor and outdoor nature of my product.

Just before launching the company, I moved to Los Angeles which could be considered the most indoor/outdoor friendly city in the United States. The indoor/outdoor nature of the L.A. lifestyle was a big influence on the materials and finishes (powder coating) that I picked for the products. These finishes give our products versatility, which is extremely important when marketing and selling the product. Our designs look just as good inside someone’s house as they do in their backyard, and that is a huge selling point for us!
