Meet Gabrielle Norton of ‘Cause We Can Events in South Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabrielle Norton.

Gabrielle, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was in my last year of college at the University of Ottawa I volunteered to plan our 25th Annual Marketing Competition and Gala. I had to do everything from sending out invitations to picking the napkin colors. I had a full course load, worked at Starbucks and put in several hours a day planning this event for months. I didn’t sleep much and my days were jam packed. It was crazy, chaotic, demanding….and I wanted to do this for the rest of my life!

The event was a huge success and I finally felt like I found my calling.

Soon after graduating with a bachelor’s in Marketing, I packed up my car and moved to California where I didn’t have to worry about the cold weather anymore. I interned with some event companies, worked for nonprofits and shadowed a few wedding planners to see what I might like best.

I’ve always loved the idea of incorporating green, Eco-friendly ideas when deciding on decor or finding news ways to give back while producing an event.

I also realized that my favorite type of event was one that took place in a natural, outdoor setting with minimal decor but that focused on creating an amazing experience full of happy people.

That’s when ‘Cause We Can Events was started. I loved what others were doing but it was never totally “me”. The name itself was inspired by the fact that we started doing events for Causes (nonprofits, fundraisers, yoga events, etc.), however, it soon turned into a wedding planning company that tailored to the wanderers of the world, the hikers and campers, the adventurers and the free spirits.

Today, we travel up and down the California coast, Joshua Tree, Ojai, Santa Barbara and so many other places in Utah, Arizona and even Canada creating dreamy outdoor experiences and adventures for people who are in love. Oh yeah, I guess you can call that wedding planning?!

Has it been a smooth road?
I guess I never knew what it meant for someone to have challenges when it came to starting a business because I had never done it! Anytime I encountered a bump in the road, I just figured this was part of the journey which really didn’t discourage me but rather got me excited to see what would happen once I solved this problem.

I think one thing that was tricky was really identifying who my ideal client was. As much as I wanted to help everyone who was getting married, I knew that I was at my best when it was an outdoor setting and the couple was adventurous, free-spirited and less focused on the details but more on the experience as a whole.

With that, comes the challenge of saying “Sorry, I don’t think I’m the right planner for you” to those that may have a beautiful vision for their wedding but may not be aligned with the ‘Cause We Can Events brand or our price range. Of course, it’s always hard to turn down business but I always want to make sure each client finds someone who is 100% on the same wavelength with them when it comes to design, details, and just overall compatibility.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with ‘Cause We Can Events – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
‘Cause We Can Events is all about thoughtful design inspired by Nature’s Beauty. We specialize in outdoor weddings and small gatherings for boho brides, creatives, and wanderers of the world. From the mountains to the desert or on the beach, we love incorporating pieces of nature in every wedding or celebration we design. We aim to use local vendors and eco-chic decor in an effort to keep Mother Nature happy and our events beautiful.

We love helping couples that want that off-the-grid kind of wedding. From “glamping” venues in Moab, Utah to cliffside overlooks in Big Sur, CA we’re up for the journey and love that this takes us to all sorts of wonderful places around the US and Canada. We believe in ditching the “wedding guidebook” and making each wedding a unique experience personalized to each couple. Whether it be canoeing on a lake or hiking through the desert, we’ll be there.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the small-town feel that the South Bay has. Although we travel a lot for the actual wedding day, we always meet our clients in cute coffee shops, yummy vegan restaurants or even at the beach. I mean, who gets to do that!? The South Bay not only has a lot of great places to eat and drinks but also has incredible wedding venues and wedding vendors. From luxurious cliffside resorts to quaint botanical gardens, I’ve worked at several of them and still get excited when clients book all local vendors to be part of their big day as well.

Personally, I also love that I can be at the beach in the morning and then ride my horse on the miles of trails in beautiful Palos Verdes in the afternoon. The two are just a few miles apart but you feel as though you are in two completely different parts of the country!

On the flip side, parking is a hot mess! In the grand scheme of things, it’s not a big deal but it can be so frustrating in the moment when you’re late to a meeting because the only parking spot you could find was 3 miles away! I get it, EVERYONE wants to live by the beach but we also live in a society where every individual in the household has their own car which leads to a lack of parking spots. Can we maybe all ride our bikes?!
