Meet Gabriela Alcala of Luminous Body

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriela Alcala.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always known that I wanted to give back to my community and in some way heal those who make it up. Massage started as something I wanted to learn how to heal the body with a touch. Growing up, my grandmother taught me how to massage and other holistic methods of healing, I wanted to gain more experience with that so I started to discover and become more and more intrigued with the idea of healing. I loved that I was able to do it myself and help heal those traumas people may have. After graduation, I still felt like there was so much more for me to learn so I went back for another year to further my knowledge within the massage world. Up until last year, I was doing mobile massage, luckily I was able to find a space located in Boyle Heights that was just perfect for me. It was almost as if it was calling my name, I have been there for a couple of months and have started to host monthly community wellness days where folks in the community are able to come in and have a massage free of charge.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road hasn’t always been smooth. I’ve encountered many obstacles along the way one of them being that English isn’t my first language and that has brought a lot of different times I’ve felt excluded from the community. When I first started off in this industry, it was a challenge to create clientele. I think that was probably one of the biggest struggles I faced luckily, I’ve gotten better at promoting myself and trying to expand my clientele.

We’ve been impressed with Luminous Body, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business aims to provide care for the community, my goal and mission is to give back to the Boyle Heights community not only the Boyle Heights community but to give back to the indigenous peoples of the land. I aspire to help those who want to reconnect to mother nature and their ancestors do so, massage is an intimate experience during the process, we release emotions and release all that brings us no good in life. I believe massage is so much more than just a way to heal your body but it’s also a way to heal the mind and soul. I believe what sets me apart from others is that I aim to create an environment where everyone is welcomed a space where it’s okay to let go of emotions. Healing past trauma is often difficult because we may not know that it’s still there, that’s why it’s important to me to let those who come to me that it happens and that there’s nothing to be ashamed of.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
If anyone would want to support Luminous Body, they can do so by sponsoring our monthly Community wellness days or if they have any ideas, they would be more than welcomed to reach out on Instagram @body_luminous.
