Meet Gabe Calvento of GCAL Fitness in Woodland Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabe Calvento.

Gabe, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I had always had an interest in martial arts but never pursued anything physically besides my older brothers bringing me to a local weight lifting gym in Middle school. Finally, in my Sophomore year of High school, I got my first job and used the money I earned to sign up for Boxing classes. Boxing was an amazing experience and eventually lead me to learning other martial arts such as Kickboxing, Muay Thai, and my greatest passions today… Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA.

To aid my martial arts pursuit, I started lifting weights with the intention of improving athletically for the sport I was most interested in at the time. This lead to tons of research on different training methods, nutritional information, and more. Finally, I got my certification and became a Nationally Accredited Certified Personal Trainer. From this point I furthered my education in Functional Training Systems for Corrective Exercise, Performance Enhancement, and more.

After gaining work experience in commercial big box gyms, Physical Therapy offices, and teaching martial arts…I started my own business, GCAL Fitness. We are a Personal Training Company in the San Fernando Valley that specializes in helping people become stronger, healthier versions of themselves. I incorporate different training methods with my clients from every walk of life to help them reach their goals. People come to me looking to burn fat, build muscle, get stronger, and just feel better. I do my best to make all that come true.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Struggles and obstacles are part of the game of Entrepreneurship. One of the biggest hurdles was understanding it was all on me as the business owner. Whether the issues were grand, such as how to grow the business on a beginning budget; Or the small, but necessary stuff, like the color on my business cards… the responsibility remains on my shoulders. It was definitely a challenge mentally in the beginning but I can honestly say that I love the process nowadays.

GCAL Fitness – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
As a Company I’m most proud of the fact that I care about each and every one of clients. I focus, research, and work hard with people to help them realize their goals and find a realistic path towards them. I’m very lucky to work with a wide range of people. For example, I’m currently helping an elderly woman with her balance so she can feel safe and comfortable doing daily chores, a mother of two get back into healthy habits and lose a few inches off her waist, and a Professional Mixed Martial Arts fighter get ready for his next bout. I would say I specialize in functional training but honestly that’s a broad term. Functionality is relative. So, I focus on helping people make their training as functional to their lifestyle as possible. I’m most proud of the smiles on my clients faces when they tell me about how their life is better because of our training.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Wow this is a tough one to pick. I have had plenty of amazing moments in my career so far but hearing my client’s success stories have to always be the top. A recent one that I’m very proud of was when a client of mine reached a long-term goal she had…thirty pounds lost! She started with me a few months ago and expressed to me for a while she wanted to reach her weight prior to her first child. We developed a Nutrition and Fitness plan together- set her daily habits, worked hard and progressed and she did it. I love those moments.
