Meet Takoda “ChampVX” Patterson of Fresh Brewed Coffee Podcast in Riverside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Takoda “ChampVX” Patterson.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always been an activist! That started in 7th grade at Henry Clay Middle School. A Male classmate was being bullied for wearing makeup, I decided to show up the next day in makeup because I figured “hey if you’re going to make fun of him, you’re going to have to make fun of me too.” There was a sense of solidarity, a sense of unity with that and I’ve been that way since then. That feeling took me down a path of activism and fast forward to adulthood I have participated in countless demonstrations. I have been through a lot of things such as homelessness, divorce, being wrongfully arrested, becoming a father and even having a major stroke that was supposed to paralyze me. I think all of that happened for a reason, all of it led me to podcasting. I know that may sound weird but the way I see it is my podcast is just a different form of my activism.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There’s something that is very difficult about doing the Fresh Brewed Coffee Podcast. Emotionally & mentally speaking. Being that I discuss and encourage vulnerability, that requires me to practice what I preach. So diving into my skin, pulling out the things that hurt, showing the world my wounds and having these conversations of healing is rewarding but it’s tough. I have recorded episodes outside in my friend’s car due to not having a place of my own. It’s been bumpy but it’s getting smoother.

Please tell us about Fresh Brewed Coffee Podcast.
So I have VXMEDIA which I run all of my stuff under. That’s my photography (@kodashots), that’s my abstract art, my podcast (@fbcoffeepod), my books that I write, etc. it’s all VXMEDIA which comes from ChampVX, the name I’m known as. Out of everything, the thing that I am most proud of as a company is that no matter which way I’m creating or speaking, I have touched someone. That’s what it’s all about, connecting with someone who doesn’t feel connected to the world. Fresh Brewed Coffee has been doing that a lot and it makes everything worth it.

What sets me apart from others? I’d hope nothing. You know what I mean? I get most people, companies want to set themselves apart but I want to root myself in you know? I want to be as approachable as close as possible. I am more about connecting with people and helping people than I am trying to be big fish.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Humanness. I don’t think that anything I do would mean anything if being human wasn’t my priority / top characteristic.
