Meet Franki Floro of Floro Choreo in West LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Franki Floro.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Franki. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m originally from Vancouver, Canada. I moved to LA when I was 18 and had some pretty big dreams that I was looking forward to fulfilling. After attending college at, The American Musical and Dramatic Academy, I found myself struggling to make money especially with the limitations of my Visa. I decided that LA was Home and nothing would stand in my way. With a lot of time (and money), I finally got my Green Card and started my journey in the entertainment world. My love of dance was always prominent in my life. When I was 10 all I wanted to do was dance, unfortunately, I had two of the leftist feet on this planet. I worked day and night to improve myself. Woke up and did ab work, did my squats before bed, watch tv while holding stretches… the desire to do better and be better was real.

Finally, all the hard work was paying off and I realized that this was what I wanted to do with my life. Being in LA, I found myself surrounded by individuals with the same dream but I knew that I was different and my passion for movement could inspire others. While building my business and brand I worked a full-time management job at a restaurant. I would work all day and teach all night. There would be one person in the class, two people, nobody at all but I continued to put in the work. I now have a huge community of “Ninjuhs” that take a class on a regular basis and the Floro Choreo name has started spreading all across North America. It took me two years to quit my restaurant job and teach/choreograph full time. Saying I have my dream job is a complete understatement. I’m not sure I can even call what I do “work” it feels way too fun!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I had to overcome a lot of struggles. Being threatened to be deported, fighting to stay in the country. As far as teaching in LA… it was hard to get people to give me a chance. I always found myself up against all the men and never understood why the male classes were so packed when I was offering the same thing with the same if not better skill sets. To be honest, even with my business thriving like it, I STILL face that same struggle. All in all, I just had to play the patience game.

Please tell us about Floro Choreo.
Floro Choreo is about bringing all walks of life together to express in the most freeing way possible… movement!!! I create a non-judgmental, safe and encouraging space which allows the dancers to be the best version of themselves. I create and deliver challenging and innovative choreography without the intimidation of the large professional dance studios. It’s not just a class it’s a community. Seeing my students bond with others and create friendships while having fun is the most rewarding feeling in the world.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I will ALWAYS remember when I first started dancing and the routine needed me to do a cartwheel. I could not do it. Like, at all. I was overweight and so uncoordinated. They made me stand up straight and do a windmill with my arms. The illusion I was doing a cartwheel. When I graduated from the studio (when I was 17) I did a cartwheel in front of the entire auditorium at our recital… I had to prove them wrong and prove to myself I could do it! I will forever remember that moment.
