Meet Robert Forster, PT of Forster Physical Therapy in Santa Monica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Forster.

Robert, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been treating patients from around the world including elite athletes and celebrities for over thirty-five years and have co-authored two books on health and fitness. The Complete Waterpower Workout Book, and Healthy Running Step by Step. Our second clinic, PHASE IV Scientific Health and Performance Center was founded 12 years ago inspired by the science used to develop elite athletes while keeping them injury free.

The science is periodization training. It was developed by the Soviets to develop peak performances. What they discovered was the body’s natural tendency to develop hormone peaks every 8 weeks. Unfortunately, the natural path to peak fitness was then chemically altered, what we call this “doping.” Doping athletes with hormones gave the Eastern block countries an unethical advantage. What we do at PHASE IV is the purest form of fitness development and is used by the greatest athletes of all time, including Allyson Felix, who manages her metabolic development in 8-week stages through heart rate training using the science of her own physiology.

Everyone’s physiology is like a fingerprint. We use that fingerprint to create personalized training programs to peak fitness and weight management gradually to prevent over-training and injury. Our methods have been proven in the results-driven world of elite athletics where we have captured over 60 Olympic Medals with the highest level of ethics as well as, NBA, Grandslam and MMA World Championships; but also everyday with clients just like you and me and everyone whose doctor recommends diet and exercise as a recipe for a healthy life.

Has it been a smooth road?
Convincing people that fad diets and extreme workouts like cross fit and others are not sustainable and cause sometimes catastrophic injury has been the most difficult battle to win. Most of our clients have been there and done that and failed to reach their goals. It’s easy to make believers once they see the progress and the changes and reach their goals. We transform lives with science and coaching because the program is sustainable, not challenging. Once people understand the inner workings of their body they realize that “slow and steady wins the race,” we teach: “No pain, all gain.”

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Forster Physical Therapy story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m most proud of being able to develop clinical excellence and fixing injuries and chronic pain that other’s could not. We know how to treat injuries, but what sets us apart is the ability to find the cause of the injury.

Forster Physical Therapy and PHASE IV are known as international destinations for physical therapy and training. We have worked with the greatest athletes of all time starting with Flo Jo and Jackie Joyner Kersee, Pete Sampras, Koby Bryant, and Maria Sharapova. I consult with Team USA Wrestling and track and Field on performance, injury prevention, and nutrition. However, the bulk of my patients are everyday people looking for solutions to pain and injury, surgery, weight loss and fitness.

What makes us different? We apply the same principles used in elite athletics to everyone. Why? Because they are proven to be the most successful. The principled approach is not about “quick fixes,” or “one size fits all.” We take a very individualized approach and tailor every treatment, nutrition and coaching plan to one’s physiology. We work as a team with our patients’ doctors, we surround our clients with support and education; we see the rewards of this approach every day.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
This is certainly an unknown. Insurance companies have damaged the clinical environment. Every practitioner has been affected. Our practice is not immune, but we rise above. We haven’t changed our clinical approach to match the smallest reimbursements from insurance. We do more for our patients than anyone else we always have and we always will.

What I see most concerning is the cost of Physical Therapy education vs. the potential salary for a clinician. I wonder how a student will ever afford the cost of the education as the industry is not as profitable as it once was.
