Meet Finlay Mathias

Today we’d like to introduce you to Finlay Mathias.

Finlay, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born in Texas but grew up in South East Asia and went to high school in the UK. I’m now on a scholarship to college in LA, where I study Music Production and Recording.

I now run Finlay Mathias Mixing, a studio engineering and mixing service based in Pasadena. Customers can send their tracks in for anything from a simple vocal cleanup to full mixdowns of entire tracks.

I’m also in the process of starting a multimedia production company, where me and my team will be producing and mixing songs, as well as directing, shooting and editing music videos. The artists we plan on working with will be announced shortly, with video production starting Q4 2020 and into 2021. I’m super excited to bring together different artistic mediums in order to help covey the emotions or story an artist is trying to tell through their music!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It was extremely hard at first to find a purpose or place for myself after moving to LA, what with so many people, but once I settled in and started working, I really slipped into a groove and have been loving every minute of it since! I’m constantly hungry and looking for the next challenge or job, so the non-stop atmosphere the LA music industry offers is perfect for me!

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on?
So right now, we work as a mixing and post-production company for artists in and around Pasadena. We do produce music as well, but our main focus is an engineering and mixing, with specifically vocal production and vocal mixing as being a recognized specialty of ours.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I’d like to give a massive shoutout to Mr. Gavin Russell back in the UK, my old school’s live sound and tech guy – he would take hours out of his week to sit with me and listen and critique my work, and he really pushed me to pursue music as a career!

Past that, I’d like to say a thank you to my friends in LA for supporting me and helping me in my new venture out of music and into video. Without them, I’d never have had the confidence to put this in motion, but here we are!
