Meet Shawny Ellsworth of Exquisite Aesthetics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawny Ellsworth.

Shawny, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My dream as a little girl was to be a dermatologist or plastic surgeon. I’ve always been intrigued and fascinated with fashion, beauty, & the medical world, however I ended up in the mortgage industry at a very young age. Needless to say, I never went to medical school or pursued my dream as becoming a doctor. I remained in the mortgage industry for over a decade until one day I woke up and said enough is enough. I knew it would take FOREVER to achieve my dreams, so I decided to get my foot in the door by attending aesthetics school and became a licensed aesthetician. Two weeks after I got my license, I opened my own aesthetics business and called it Exquisite Aesthetics. It didn’t take long for me to realize that facials weren’t my thing. I live for the instant gratification and wanted to do fillers and Botox. I wanted to be a “Medical Aesthetician”.

Unfortunately, in the state of CA you must be a Nurse to be a “Medical Aesthetician.” 7 months pregnant with our second child, I closed down my business, and I went in for nursing school orientation at Sacramento State University. The teachers stated “We’re going to own you for 2 years while you’re in nursing school” and I still had 2 years before I could even get into nursing school! Boy, was this going to be a long road. I didn’t want to go to school for 4 years full time and not work, so I went ahead and went back to what I knew. Mortgages! I figured I’d take my pre-req’s at night and work at the mortgage company during the day. One day, a text message came through that had changed my life forever. My friend Toya texted me and said she wanted me to “microblade” her eyebrows and sent me a link to a local training course. I didn’t want to do it at first, but agreed and fell in love with the whole process.

This was the ‘instant gratification” that I was longing for and I immediately re-opened my studio downtown and became a tattoo artist. I was literally working 2 jobs, 12 hours a day, 7 days a week for about 4 months with a newborn baby. Luckily, I have an amazing husband and parents that supported me while I worked like a mad woman. After 6 months, I was fortunate enough to leave the mortgage company and pursue my business full time. I had clients traveling from all over the world to see me, but what hit home was when my uncle passed away from cancer. I knew I had a gift in this art and I wanted to do more with it. I took this skill even further and attended a medical tattooing school at Penn Medicine in PA and learned how to do 3D Areola Repigmentation & Scar Camouflaging. This was huge for me as I’ll be changing lives and fulfilling my dreams of being in medical aesthetics. We recently moved out of Sacramento and opened a Paramedical Tattoo Studio in Hermosa Beach. I offer 3D semi-permanent eyebrows, areola repigmentation, scar camouflage, and scalp micropigmenation. I promise to make this experience as comfortable as possible and make you feel as beautiful as you look.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It took some trial and error to figure what my niche is. I wanted to change lives and have instant gratification, but also to be able to perform such procedures within my scope of practice. Being a medical/cosmetic tattoo artist has changed my life and in return I was able to change the lives of so many. However, this has not been a smooth road, not one bit! Word of advice to all the dreamers, doers, and believers. Do not listen to the nay-sayers! They will kill your dreams before you even try it. If you believe in yourself, anything is possible.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck! Only hard work, dedication, and belief in oneself.
