Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Mathews.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Evan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Born & raised in North Carolina, I graduated from Appalachian State University in May 2013 and moved out to LA in August 2013. Lucked into an audio engineering internship at a studio in Hollywood with Syd & The Internet via twitter dot com. Subsequently met/jammed with recorded Malia (Malia Vibes) for her debut EP early 2014. Booked a few coffee shop styles show as a duo and have kept the ball rolling ever since. I have played guitar in a few different outfits (alt. rock/soul/funk) lending my helping hands to friends whenever I could and always felt most at home just jamming alongside Malia (either electric or acoustic).
It very much felt and still feels so natural to be able to grow together musically. I got the amazing chance to play alongside Malia in support of Syd’s ‘Always Never Home’ Tour for the west coast dates at the end of 2017 & most recently played a Soulection live show in LA at the El Rey with Joe Kay. When I’m not creating or performing with my best friend (Malia), I like to spend my time at my desk in my bedroom just noodling around my home studio, crafting songs for my solo side project called Tomahawk Baby.
It’s really just a fun and effortless way for me to stay true and creative, writing honestly for myself as opposed to writing for someone else in a session. I have a few little SoundCloud singles floating around the world wide web and look forward to sharing plenty more (I’m sitting on a hard drive full, just waiting for the universe to tell me that it’s time).
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing good ever comes easy. There have been so many struggles that have come in all shapes, sizes and forms, I just refuse to lose sight of the vision – doing what I love to do most: play guitar! More specifically, playing music that I love with people that I love and ultimately shedding light.
TOMAHAWK BABY – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Evan, ET, Tomahawk Baby; they’re all just different hats that I wear at different times of the day. I feel like I’m here to play music for the kid that I once was (and still am).
Bedroom producing, audio engineering, and collaborating in the studio and on the stage with Malia are all different ways that I can stay creative and productive. Where passion and purpose intersect, you’ll find me happily strummin’ along.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me is just being able to be self-sufficient and being able to wake up the next day with gratitude and having the same goal in mind. Play music & inspire; whether it’s for two people, two hundred people, two thousand people or simply just for myself.
