Meet Ev Marquee of Ev Marquee Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ev Marquee.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Ev. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My interest in photography stretches back to childhood. I recall my mother documenting our lives with disposable cameras and my siblings and I looking forward to developing them and looking through them together, passing the photos down one at a time. In my high school years, I was introduced to film and dark rooms, a time when I used creative platforms to express myself as an angsty teenager (haha). Unfortunately, when I declared wanting to pursue arts as a career the idea was shot down as one that would not bring me success; my parents asked me to reconsider and choose a “real profession”.

I attended UCLA and received a BA in Psychology. As I was preparing for graduate school I decided to take some time off to travel the world… I wound up being away for 6 months. It was an incredibly life-changing experience and it was during my travels that I rediscovered my passion for photography. I found myself wanting to document EVERYTHING and so I decided that upon my return the first thing I’d do was buy the latest DSLR camera and teach myself how to use it.

After years of trial and error, testing different styles of photography from nightlife and family portraiture to weddings and aerial, my business slowly evolved to the place it is now. The field was my school and just like anyone else who starts off on their own, I went from photographing any client that came my way to eventually finding my niche, understanding my style and what my purpose was as a female photographer. I’m very proud to say that I’m self-taught. Many don’t realize what it takes; the determination, the discipline, the courage.

I have since had the pleasure of working with amazing people, have several publications under my belt and continue to be surprised by the universe with unbelievable opportunities.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Overall, I have been blessed in my journey. However, I will say that in the beginning I mistakenly thought, like most, that being a full-time photographer meant you get to create full time. The truth is that you work twice as much and the majority of your time is actually spent running a business. When you’re not backed by a team with various departments, you also have to learn enough about the other roles required and wear the less glamorous hats here and there.

Aside from the early struggles of running my own business, there was also the fear, self-doubt and general negative self-talk that came up on occasion. I was diving into new territory and finding myself way outside of my comfort zone. However, I feel that this is a general human struggle that we all work hard to overcome as we live and take risks.

Every day truly brings a new learning experience and I’ve come to enjoy the hustle.

Ev Marquee Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m primarily a fashion and intimate portrait photographer from LA, but also spend time documenting milestones such as maternities and engagements. I specialize in natural light and black and white photography. My artistic intention and style can be described as empowering, sensual and honest…a true representation of who I am.

My passion and focus lie in providing high-quality photography services to individuals who don’t typically have the opportunity to have a professional photo shoot experience. I love working with the everyday woman, unconventional beauties and the POC and LGBTQ+ community. As a female photographer, I understand the common insecurities and doubts that may arise from the vulnerability of being in front of a camera and thus my goal is to always provide a safe and comfortable space for my clients to feel at ease and be themselves. We talk about not only what they want but why they want it. This bond and communication is what fosters amazing outcomes.

I consider myself more than just a photographer – I’m also a healer. My highly intuitive nature and ability to connect more deeply is the driving force behind my business. I believe in art with a purpose and my personal goal is to empower. Most people don’t see their own beauty and never consider that sometimes they just need to let an artist show them a more beautiful viewpoint. I receive inspiration from shared client experiences and my spiritual journey to convey genuine emotion. Thus, the healing begins when I am able to act as a mirror and reflect my clients’ beauty and essence in ways they didn’t see before. This connection is what sets me apart from the rest.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I measure success by levels of personal/spiritual growth. For example, being true to who I am and my purpose regardless of how uncomfortable it makes me feel is a form of success. And I feel that for me, this has been required in order for abundance to set in.

So long as I am creating content that I am passionate about, continue to attract amazing clients and have an audience that understands my style and what I stand for, I’m winning. Any publications or recognition that comes my way is more like the cherry on top.
