Today we’d like to introduce you to EV Cassidy.
EV, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Some find it shocking to know that before I started Cake & Bar Angels, I never knew how to bake or shake a cocktail. Like many others, I spent the infancy of my career in a completely different industry than the ones I ended up owning. Being an LA native, it was natural for me to fall in love with fashion so I spent the better part of a decade specializing in visual merchandising and management.
With the skill set I gained, I began consulting on the side for small businesses and start-ups, helping people turn ideas into businesses and businesses into more profitable brands. I found myself telling my clients “If you’re talented enough to make others millions, you’re likely talented enough to make yourself millions.”
It wasn’t until I finally took my own advice that CAKE was born. My friend needed a cake for her baby shower and the Visual Merchandiser in me began designing away. With overwhelming excitement towards the 3-tier cake I delivered and my new found obsession for cake design, the Entrepreneur in me took over. I left Rodeo Drive and turned in my designer brands for sprinkles. Over the next four years, CAKE secured a drool-worthy product line, near limitless design capabilities and a healthy client list. We had been featured in publications, worked with celebrity clientele and became the preferred vendor for venues and event planners.
The Entrepreneur in me took over again when I had an itch to diversify revenue streams. I wanted more opportunity but I also wanted to stay parallel to the event space I had just spent four years learning about. When my girlfriends complained of poor drink quality during our weekly happy hours, I saw the other opportunity I was looking for. I went to bartending school, learned cocktail creation from the bottom up, recruited and trained a gorgeous team of talented bartenders and immediately started selling Model Mixology with our sugar orders (because a party RARELY needs sugar without booze.) With both companies complimenting and building on each other, I’ve been blessed to find passion in not only one specialty but two! And although we don’t save lives or solve poverty, we create memories, and that’s all we’re left with at the end of our days.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When I left Rodeo, I poured every dollar of my savings into CAKE. New equipment, design tools, prop installations, the list goes on. I learned very quickly that cake design is a VERY expensive industry to maintain and while I’m always having a blast surrounded by the most delicious chocolates and the most gorgeous gold foils, it inevitably sets in that the possibility of order lulls are very real. The other struggle I face is the strong desire to eventually replace myself in the cake design role. Through many training sessions with staff, I’ve learned that being an artist isn’t completely trainable. It’s a talent that needs organic skill. It’s hard to find and harder to teach.
Cake & Bar Angels – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
CAKE – Gourmet Sugar Service is a designer cake & pastry company that specializes in custom dessert, stylized dessert bars, and corporate packages. Our custom desserts are made entirely from scratch and we vow to never use preservatives or boxed product, staying parallel with today’s healthy lifestyle goals (we also supply vegan and gluten-free options). Our stylized dessert bars are show-stopping pastry presentations that elevate your event to the next level and our corporate packages are weekly sugar deliveries to offices and production studios all over LA. It replaces their ordinary Chex Mix and hot chocolate offerings in the break room with freshly baked custom creations such as mini cheesecake bites and company logo sugar cookies.
Bar Angels – Model Mixology is a staffing agency that provides beautiful male and female “angels” for events all over LA. We don’t just supply bartenders, we supply mixologists. Our beautiful staff can be set in front of any bar and create unique craft cocktails made custom to your event. You want a cocktail that embodies your company for the holiday party this year or a cocktail that melts your two favorite drinks together for your birthday? We’ve got your back. We also supply barbacks, hosts, cocktail servers, waiters and atmosphere models.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I personally define success as constant personal development (spiritually as much as physically.) Are you able to look objectively at yourself and take criticism as an opportunity to build rather than just a hit to your ego? Being introspective has helped me take the obstacles I’ve encountered as a lesson to learn from and the negative thoughts as passing clouds, not here to stay. This mindset helps keep me in forward motion regardless of the circumstances. I believe that so long as you’re not stagnant, and every day you’re building, growing, learning and setting intentions, you’re succeeding at becoming the very best version of you.
