Meet Ester Nugrahini Holt of Ester Cakes in Garden Grove

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ester Nugrahini Holt.

Ester Nugrahini, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my passion for baking as a hobby. When I was in the 6th grade, I started baking cakes with my neighbor and then every Sunday, we sold what we baked on the weekends at church. My mom alway supported me by buying me cake decorating tools, mixer and even sent me to take shortcake decorating course, where I was the youngest in the class. At that time, my hand was not even big enough to grab the piping bag!

The baking and cake decorating stopped when I went to college. But, after I had my family, I started again as in Indonesia, I had housekeepers that loved to bake cookies. So, I learned from her how to make Indonesian cookies and we sold them from office to office in Jakarta, Indonesia. From there, I got back to baking and decorating cakes again.

I mostly learned my fondant decorating skills from books. I bought a lot of decorating books and my idol is Debbie Brown. I started it as a hobby but began selling my cakes to friends and family because people enjoyed what I was making and producing.

When I moved to the Los Angeles for good, I worked for some reputable bakeries and my last job was at a hotel in Pasadena. I bought a plastic cake comb for $ 28 and I asked my husband if he can make me the same cake comb but from metal and he did. A lot of my cake decorator friends started asking where I got my cake comb. So, from there we started producing and selling the metal cake combs online and our business since then has grew rapidly! We have over 20 different cake comb design and our customers are from all over the world!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, It has not always been a smooth road as we have a lot of competitors and also some companies who copied our designs. We always have to be one step ahead of others by creating new designs that are innovative and intriguing. But no matter what, we never compromised our quality and always put our customers’ satisfaction as a top priority! I think that is why customers value our products over our competitors.

We’d love to hear more about your business.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was shy. Even though I am initially shy, I am very friendly once I am more comfortable and have warmed up to the person or situation. However, now it is easy for me to connect and relate to others as I have worked in the customer service business throughout the years.

Additionally, I was very neat and I liked everything clean and in order with my work and my workspace. I am still like that now. I have always loved to learn new techniques related to cake decorating, and so I have always been very curious and I am very much a self-initiated learner. In my free time, then and now, I like to look up classes and tutorials on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and blogs, so I can further my skills and knowledge.
