Today we’d like to introduce you to Estee Cohen.
Estee, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After working as a contract recruiter for several years, I realized that no company was catering to small businesses who needed quick, cost-effective hiring solutions. I opened a Facebook page and the concept was an immediate hit, I closed five jobs my first month in business.Word spread and we doubled in sales every year since its inception, entirely through word of mouth. Most companies start off by hiring us for 1 position, and when they see how effective and enjoyable the process is, they usually hire us for a second position and, eventually, we become their main source of filling open jobs. To date, California Job Shop has five employees and has filled 3,000 positions at every level and across many industries. We no longer limit ourselves to small businesses, we also work with medium and large businesses and some amazing non-profits.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes, I was very fortunate that California Job Shop tapped into a need immediately and was profitable from day one. Putting up boundaries with my clients has been my biggest struggle, initially I was willing to do anything and everything and would work all night to make a client happy. Now, though I still work hard to make our clients happy, I generally work during normal business hours and have much better work-life balance.
Please tell us about California Job Shop.
California Job Shop is a direct hire recruiting firm. This means that we represent the company and work on filling their open, permanent positions. We are not an agency in the sense that the employees never work for us, we handle the sourcing and screening of applicants for jobs. We offer full-cycle recruiting for all career levels, I used to say “from the janitor to the CEO”, which is absolutely accurate.
There are many things that set CJS apart from other firms: one, we have short contracts, you work with us for a maximum of 45 days, two, our prices are unbeatable, they are often 10x less than other firms, three we don’t waste any time, we cut to the chase of what you are actually looking for and get the job filled, and four we have a very active and loyal community of job seekers who come to us for career advice and guidance.
What I’m proudest of is that our clients are very loyal and several have been with us since the first year we opened.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Wow, I love this question. I had begged my mom to buy me a kitten since I was three years old, but our family was a “dog family” so it was out of the question. One day, when I was in fifth grade, my mom picked me up from school and a tiny white kitten with black legs was scampering all around inside the car. It was an amazing surprise, and I had Tickles for ten years.
