Meet Esperanza Leon of Muchness in Acton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Esperanza Leon.

Esperanza, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Most people know me as Espi. I was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley. As a kid, we moved around from place to place. At the age of seven, I started to notice my interest in the arts. My mom also took notice and surprised me with an easel and a wood box filled with crayons, markers and paint. Pretty soon, I was doing something creative on everything. As I got older, I started customizing my own shoes, shirts, and sometimes even my pants. I had my own fashion twist on things. It got pretty bad, I must say. At one point, I would have all my outfits picked out for the week by bedtime on Sundays just so that I knew I was happy with my outfits for the week. Little did I know how this would play a role in my future. In high school, I took my first digital class. This opened a whole new world for me and art. I was a bit of a book worm but the cool crowd accepted me. I soon became the go to friend for custom fliers for parties. Who can forget those flyer party days. After high school, I continued my journey in the digital arts and graduated from The Art Institute of Hollywood. Soon my carrier as graphic designer was on its way and I was designing packaging for some of my favorite brands like Nintendo & Disney. A lot of my passion for digital art came from having the ability to take a concept idea, sketching it and bringing it to life.

Has it been a smooth road?
Through all this, there have been some challenges. Sometimes as adults, we get sucked into our 9-5 routine and lose a bit of the passion that got us there in the first place. I, at one point lost confidence in my own art. Luckily, I have some awesome peers around me that encouraged me and pushed me to follow my passions.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Muchness story. Tell us more about the business.
I started muchness to bring two generations together, what parent doesn’t like their kid to like the same things they do? My daughter was a great influence, I merged my love for crafting, designing, horror and came up with muchness. I got to design and use HTV to bring it to life on shirts. Muchness represents who you are, your passion, your character, your unique self. I chose skulls to represent my muchness because I am a big horror fan but mainly because deep down, we are all the same. Our bones can all break, grow and rebuild. Children are our future and no matter what, we look like we are all still the same. Muchness is for kids and their guardians whether you’re a mom, a tia, or a silly dad. You should never lose your muchness.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles has been a great place to start my business. It is a melting pot for all things culture and art. Any place is a great place to start a business as long as you believe in yourself and what you are doing. Los Angeles is a great place because it presents opportunities to build confidence along your journey in its many stages.
