Meet Erin Tauscher of Splendid

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Tauscher.

Erin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my company 17 years ago with one of my best friends and $500 each. I was a freelance line producer and met my business partner, Taylor Ferguson while working on a project at the company she was running. I convinced her to leave her current position and start a company together. I was 3o years old.

We didn’t do a business plan or take a loan, we just did it. Our motto was, “take a leap and the net will appear.” The net has always been there, sometimes a little lower than I like, but all these years later it always appears. Our billings are now consistently in the millions every year.

Since I started the company, I have never invested my own money, borrowed from anyone or taken a loan. It’s been a lot of hard work, sweat and tears but I wouldn’t change a thing. The passion I have for my company, directors, clients and the industry as a whole has kept me going.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to where I am hasn’t been smooth at all. In fact, it’s been downright bumpy at times. If anything goes wrong at the company, I get the phone call. If a camera malfunction on one of our shoots, if a crew member gets injured, if a director is unhappy if a client hasn’t paid us on time, if an intern blogs about a secret product they weren’t supposed to and the client calls and threatens to sue… I get the call.

My business is a constantly changing landscape so you never know what is going to happen day-to-day. This is what makes what I do challenging and exciting at the same time.

Splendid & Co. – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a production company specializing primarily in commercial advertising. We produce commercials and digital content for some of the biggest brands in the world. Advertising agencies and clients hire us directly to produce content for them. We have also sold a television show and been involved in feature films.

I am most proud of starting this business and maintaining it for 17 years. A lot of people say “I’m going to start a company,” and never do it. I’m a risk taker by nature, and by taking risks, I have been able to reap the rewards.

We are a 100% woman owned and operated company. We were also one of the first production companies to sign women directors. Today we have 5 women directors on our roster.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I can’t say there has been just one proud moment of my career thus far, there have been so many. I am quite proud of the opportunities I’ve been able to give women in a very male-dominated industry.

Just last week we won a gold Clio for a Chevrolet Goalkeepers campaign designed to demonstrate the possibilities sports can provide to millions of girls worldwide.
