Meet Erika Hanson of Suu Kuu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Hanson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Erika. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I’ve been fascinated by and involved with plants from a very young age, and I was always inspired by my grandmother’s garden. I majored in Drawing at an art school and made intricate botanical drawings in complex, layered works. I have always been committed to health and wellness pursuits. Health food stores are like a second home to me. Food choices and plant-based medicines are always my first thought in terms of health care.

I started studying herbalism more deliberately a few years ago and began developing my own herbal medicines for my family’s and my own health needs. When a friend invited me to make some tinctures for his shop, I welcomed the invitation and could feel that this was the path that I wanted to continue. I love the farmers we work with and feel so much excitement about creating plant-based medicines that offer support to the lives of others.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In many ways, it has been smooth. Things have fallen into place at the right times, confirming that this is the path I am meant to be on. Forming working relationships with people along the way has helped reinforce this affirmation.

Of course, it has been an incredible learning experience, and mistakes are always part of a process. I would say the biggest struggle has been managing the demand of doing nearly everything ourselves for the business- herbalism and product development, sales and marketing, design, accounting, social media, and working with our farmers and other suppliers.

All the while, I homeschool my two daughters and take care of our home. Fortunately, I am able to move through the high stress and these demands by incorporating our products into my routine. From skin care to tinctures and tonics, my wellness is supported by Suu Kuu, so that I can extend that offering to others.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a small batch plant medicine business, with a foundation in herbalism. We make traditional herbal tinctures and whole-plant based skin care. We don’t use any essential oils, sweeteners, artificial flavors, or additives. Most of our blends contain CBD, which is from Colorado sun-grown hemp. We also work with a local farm to source our medicinal plants and herbs, and a local distillery for our extraction spirits.

It is most important for us to use ingredients that are responsibly and carefully cultivated, with sustainable and ethical practices. We believe in only using ingredients of the highest quality and intention. What sets us apart from other CBD companies is the use of medicinal plants and herbs, which are valued for their potency and healing potential, just as much as the CBD.

For example, our Sea of Serenity Adrenal Support features Violet, Holy Basil, Nettles, Milky Oats, and Licorice, all to nourish the adrenals and the nervous and endocrine systems. We make an Immunity Tonic, which you use like a mouthwash to promote oral health, gut health, and immune function. Mouth Moon features Spilanthes, Clove, Oregano, Plantain, Peppermint, and Propolis, along with a 10mg. CBD dose delivered sublingually.

I absolutely can’t live without the mouthwash! I love making herbal blends that enrich my life, and love sharing something that may be transformational in someone else’s health and wellness journey.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I lived across the road from an Amish family, and I was fascinated by the way they lived. I spent a lot of time outside, eating cherries, and I sang a lot. My happiest times were with my grandmother hiking, gardening, and baking. Still my favorite activities.
