Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Belalcazar.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Erika. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
Sweet Crumb Cakery started four years ago as a hobby/creative outlet making cakes for family and friends. I started my CAKING journey by taking Wilton cake decorating classes and also got certified as a Wilton Instructor to teach cake decorating. I dedicated countless hours and sleepless nights, practicing and watching YouTube soak up as much knowledge as possible!
I am now able to implement my knowledge and experience to create cake decorating workshops for those who share a passion for cakes like I do. It’s very exciting to meet others from the “cake” community, to share ideas and talk everything cakes. I have had the privilege to work alongside many vendors to create magical events and styled shoots.
Lastly, being able to see my work published online and in magazines has validated all my hard work, making me want to push even harder to make my dreams come true.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, I think with everything in life, when starting or creating something new there will be challenges that present themselves forcing you to learn and adjust. There were many struggles, failures, and mistakes along the way that taught me many things and lots of patience!
Some of those struggles were due to lack of experience in certain aspects, finding my own creative style, dealing with a small workspace (lack of storage) and standing out in a world full of many talented bakers.
Please tell us about Sweet Crumb Cakery.
Sweet Crumb Cakery specializes in custom cakes and desserts for all occasions. I do it all from email inquiries/quotes, baking, decorating and teaching. I’m proud that this business has had its name printed/mentioned on magazines, online blogs, and social media.
Representing and displaying cakes for The Knot and Crate & Barrel was an unforgettable experience and hope to work among many other well-known names in the near future.
What sets us apart from the rest are MY WORKSHOPS. I absolutely love hosting a cake decorating workshops.
Being able to teach with a hands-on approach, encouraging each student along the way and seeing the look on their face once they have finished their creation, is what I live for. Seeing their eyes wide open filled with accomplishment and pride is why I love doing what I do.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I think I would’ve gone to pastry school to gain more knowledge about the science of baking. I really didn’t think that my cake decorating hobby would turn into the business that it is today, so I embrace all the experiences that I’ve learned in “my career” because without them I wouldn’t be where I am today.
