Meet Erica Torres of Erica Torres Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Torres.

Erica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Erica Torres Photography started I want to say… Back in 2013. That was when I took on my first paid gig which was an engagement photo shoot for a friend. I always loved photography, but never really put the thought of making a career out of it until my first paid shoot. When that happened, I decided to take the professional photography course at Fullerton Junior College to learn as much as possible about the business of photography.

While in the program, I was taking as many photo gigs as possible whether it be paid or unpaid I just wanted to get my foot in the door and rub elbows with as many professionals as possible. I made a goal for myself to have at least 2-3 shoots per month just so I stay in practice. Before I knew it, my portfolio was growing and I was getting recognition for my work.

After completing the certificate program, I decided to really hit the ground running to see if I could make Erica Torres Photography not just a thought or dream, but a reality.

So here it is… Erica Torres Photography is up and running.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been quite a nerve wrecking road I must say. I really wasn’t sure what would be the first steps to take when going about this whole starting a business thing so I did what anybody would probably do…. I GOOGLED A LOT OF TOPICS. haha. Then I searched Yelp for local professional photographers around me and contacted them to have a coffee with me while I pick their brains and asked as many questions as possible. One of the biggest struggles for me was being afraid to take chances. I’m the type of person who likes to play it safe so going into the freelancing world of photography where if you don’t get gigs you don’t eat is something that definitely leaves me full of fear, but with prayer, the support of everyone around me, and hard work it’s definitely something that I can work through.

Erica Torres Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My company is a photography company that is concentrated on headshots, engagements, weddings, and studio portraiture.

I’m most known for my studio and engagement photography as of right now. I’m trying to really step up my headshot promotion to get more clients in for that.

What sets my company apart from others is that I’m not just selling a product I am giving my clients an experience that they can remember for a lifetime. My shoots are always full of laughs and we always have a good time because I want my photos to have life to them. Anybody could go to a studio sit there for a couple minutes and have their picture taken, but I want my clients to have much more than that because life is much more than that. I want them to look at their photo and think ” OH! I remember this! I had such a great time!”

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
This is one of my favorite questions. A close friend of mine and I were just talking about this a couple days ago. Short answer is I’ll know I’m successful when I have Annie Leibovitz calling me up to ask me for advice on a photo project. OFCOURSE IM KIDDING THOUGH. HAHA.

The criteria for success for me is to not give up. Every day that I am working hard is a successful day because you have to take it a day at a time.
