Meet Erica Fulcher of Roux Beaute by Erica in West Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Fulcher.

Erica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
You know the saying “people come in your life as a lesson or blessing?” Well, that is exactly how I discovered my passion for skin & beauty.

Ever since I was a little girl, I always loved masks, scented soaps, perfumes, and yummy lotions. Anything that made me smell good and kept my skin soft and shiny! I would rather play with cosmetics than dolls. I remember being seven years old and going to the nail shop with my mom and begging the manicurist to give me spare nail tips so that I could tape or glue them on at home.

I’ve always had oily skin and large pores. At 12 years old I faithfully exfoliated my skin with St. Ives Apricot Scrub followed by Queens clay mask (not that I recommend now), lol but, simply because I loved how glowing and smooth my skin felt and looked afterward. By the time I was 16, I started getting facials. I had no idea of the benefits of a facial but I knew they made me feel pretty and confident.

Looking back, I have always loved self-care, pampering my friends and became a Spa addict and product junky, which explains my passion for skin & beauty.

In 2014, I was in my 20s and deciding what I wanted to do with my life. A friend of mine suggested the idea of me going to school for skin care. I was like ”yea right!” I’m a pretty low maintenance chick and couldn’t see myself being responsible for someone else face. Well, the conversation was bought up again but this time I really considered it. Within that week, I visited a Marinello School of Beauty campus and enrolled myself in their Esthetics program. Little did I know this was the best decisions I’ve ever made!

Honestly, I had no idea what to expect let alone what Esthetics really consisted of. From the moment I started the program, I was in love! There was so much to learn about skin, how it works, how to treat it and I was very fortunate to have a wonderful, passionate instructor that was very inspirational and still to this day my mentor & friend.

It didn’t take long for me to see the endless Entrepreneur opportunities in my future as a Licensed Esthetician. I immediately started my Instagram page and started marketing myself as a future Esthetician, booking appointments at my school and building my clientele with friends and family. I searched online skin and beauty publications, joined professional facebook groups such as The Esthetician Connection. Anything that would help me learn and give me additional resources and education for my career.

My career started at Bliss Spa in Westwood as a Spa Concierge. It taught and inspired me so much. Not only did I get a chance to work around other like-minded professionals but, I fimilarized myself with many brands, ingredients and got hands-on experience working in a spa environment while attending school. This is where my passion for clean beauty formulas emerged.

Through my career, I have won The National Aesthetic Spa Network Glymed Scholarship and I am so excited to be a finalist inThe 2019 International Skin Games holistic category.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I believe nothing is easy, however, doing what you love makes all the obstacles and challenges worth it.

It is so important to understand that anything you want to accomplish in life requires commitment and sacrifice. Of course, I wanted the reward and sucess right away and would rather spend our time with friends and family but, for me, my sole focus was completing my Esthetics Program. I felt like my future was depending on this. There was nothing else in the world that mattered more to me. In order for this to happen, it required me to become focused and commitment to attending class daily on a weekly basis. My plan was to be a Beautypreneur and I knew this was the first step.

My biggest challenge actually FEAR was passing the State Board exam. When you want something so badly, study endlessly and know that passing a state exam is the final requirement, it’s pretty much all you can think about. “What if I don’t pass?” I think everyone can relate. But, confidence is key! I worked hard, and very proud of how far I have come. I know hard work pays offand at the end of the day, ”if at first you don’t succeed, get yourself up and try again!”

One obstacle I had to overcome was getting employed as an Esthetician. It took months and many interviews before I could find a spa that saw my passion and trusted my expertise. When you are fresh out of school companies are hesitant to hire unexperienced Estheticians. I always tell others to read, read, read! Learn the histology of the skin, study ingredients, and conditions. It was very discouraging at times because I felt that I wasn’t among the ”average.” but I never gave up, I believed in myself and doors began to open. There was no stopping me!

There are so many steps to building a brand. As well, the beauty industry is very profitable, big and competitive in Los Angeles and that’s ok. I believe preparation is the key to success. ”If you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready.”

Honestly, it does not happen overnight. Word of mouth is the best referral. Your clients will choose you over the next based on your customer services, expertise, passion and energy. You will have slow to great months. Sometimes it may feel like your strategies are not working but, this is why you should not measure your success based on value, social media likes or compare yourself to others. Instead, base your success on your business goals. Especially if you’re a small business or startup with little financial resources. Look at ”how many new inquiries/customers did you get in a particular month? How many people visited your website? How much time did you spend on marketing? What did you cross off you to do list? Always re-create, re-write and keep it going.

The bottom line is, anything you love is worth fighting for. When do your very best, you will not fail! I promise!

Please tell us about Roux Beaute by Erica.
Roux Beaute by Erica is a Beauty + Skincare business that specializes in Natural skincare for all skin types. My goal is to “inspire people to be their best and most confident self through skin health.” Every facial treatment is customized to target individual goals.

Fully customized means that if you need a peel, LED therapy or a specialty mask, it is all included in your treatment. Rather than create a “Spa Menu” with trendy services which are mostly marketing gimmicks and do not target individual concerns and goals, I designed my practice so that every client gets their own “Customized Facial”, this approach allows me to help each of clients reach their skincare goals and feel confident in their skin without having to “break the bank.” I only treat the skin with botanical and clean ingredients that are fruit and plant-based. They smell delicious, feel great and deliver safe, effective results. All the products I use are free of chemicals, parabens and any harmful ingredients.

I am best known for an approachable and vivacious personality, passion and desire to uniquely understand my client’s skin and how it works. I believe knowledge is power and a requirement when treating the skin which is really what really sets me apart from others. I’m not just giving great facials, but I give my clients lifelong healthy tools for their skin and make them feel comfortable and confident.

My commitment to my clients is to stay current with beauty trends, ingredients, and technology. I hold many certificates with professional brands and always seeking advanced education. This allows me to build trust and long lasting relationships.

I am proud to be validate by The Esthetics Council (a union for estheticians) for professional accomplishments, experience, education, and licensure.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Sometimes, I say, “if I only knew I had this talent earlier in life” but then I get over it and remind myself, ”timing is everything.”It is never too late to do what you love.” In fact, I’m very proud and thankful that I utilized my school’s resources, invested in self-promotion, networking and advance education. I had to create personal and professional goals for myself and continued to reach them with consistency. Remember, “rome was not built overnight” so, neither will the things you want without GRIT.
