Meet Emma Calvillo of Fenyx Rose Music

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Calvillo.

Emma, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am born and raised in Los Angeles and was raised in a very musical family. My sisters and I grew up singing together and started pursuing music professionally when I was about 12 years old. We started working with vocal producer Kuk Harrell and his team Red Zone Ent in 2006.

During our time with Red Zone, we were also signed to record label Interscope Records, and manager Joe Simpson. Through a series of events we ended up in Nashville and worked there for about 2 years. We moved back to LA about 3 years ago, and have since then released a full-length album of original music and 2 cover albums.

I have recently been inspired to work on a solo project, and am now putting together content and songs for the project.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As most artists can attest to, the music industry has been an incredibly bumpy road. My sisters and I have gone through many disappointments, many people overpromising and under delivering, we’ve been lied to, so many events have fallen through, the list goes on and on.

Most recently, my sisters and I have decided to go our separate ways and work on our own endeavors. Although I’m extremely disappointed, and even heartbroken, I am also inspired by the thought of a new journey and developing my own brand.

We’d love to hear more about your Fenyx Rose.
Fenyx Rose is my new project that I’m developing. I’m still in the very early stages, but my intention is to express the most honest version of myself. I’m inspired by artists like Lauryn Hill, SZA, H.E.R, Miguel, Erykah Badu, and Earth Wind and Fire to name a few.

I’m a huge fan of all genres of music, but R&B, Soul, and Hip Hop are my wheelhouse. I want to make music that inspires others expresses my highest self, and provides a platform for me to help others better their lives.

What were you like growing up?
I was the sassiest child that’s probably ever lived. I’m the youngest of three girls, and my sisters have strong personalities, so naturally, I had to stand my ground and be as loud as possible. My sisters and my favorite pastime growing up was putting on shows for our parents in front of the front door.

By the time I was 6 our mom started teaching us 3 part harmony, and we started arranging acapella versions of every song we knew. So I spent most of my time as a kid singing or arranging songs. When I wasn’t singing, I spent most of my time with friends or family.

My parent’s home has always been the hub for all our friends and family. Hosting has enriched my life since I can remember, and some of my favorite memories are from parties at my parent’s house with family and friends.
