Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Ruddo.
Emily, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After growing up and attending college in Maryland, I made the move to LA for a career in technology sales. In the midst of a successful career in technology sales and marketing, my passion for design and rave reviews from friends I had done design work for encouraged me to pursue design full-time. It was a big risk to leave behind the stability of a corporate career but making the change to work in a field that I am passionate about was the goal. I leverage my business background every day in my design business and am so thankful to have that foundation before staring my own business. Coupling my design talent with the discipline honed by my previous profession, I ensure that every client’s voice is heard and translated into a design that reflects their desired aesthetic.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting a new career was definitely a struggle but I applied my business experience to carve a path so that I had momentum to slowly build this business. I leveraged social media as a marketing tool to get my work out there and asked for references and referrals from trusted clients. I met supportive design peers along the way that I could turn to when I needed help, asked a lot of questions at networking events and never gave up.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Emily Ruddo Design story. Tell us more about the business.
My mission is to create one-of-a-kind harmonious environments that provide a sanctuary from everyday life. My signature style is a fresh take on traditional by blending tailored details with fresh colors and patterns.
Drawing on my East Coast upbringing and years of Los Angeles residency, I offer bicoastal design services that capture my unique ability to balance East Coast elegance with vibrant California color. Seamlessly integrating classical elements with polished patterns are trademarks of my designs. My attention to detail, along with my understanding of different lifestyles, results in serene casual-chic spaces.
I specialize in residential design and also do flower styling for small events. Most of my interior design projects include both indoors and outdoors so also styling flowers for client’s tables and interior spaces for events was a natural progression for me. I am already very familiar with their homes, have selected most of the accessories in the home so adding flowers for special occasions they host is quite easy to do. I love working with gardens and flowers so I have added that to my list of services. I have even done weddings for close friends.
I am most proud of the relationships I have built with clients. It is a personal experience working on someone’s home so the friendships I have gained and the happiness that these design projects bring are the most rewarding aspects of the work.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in bad luck. “Bad luck” is just life telling you you’re going in the wrong direction. Disappointments are inevitable so stay flexible, roll with it and change your course if things aren’t going well. I believe intuition has played a large roll in my business. If you know yourself and what makes you happy, it’s easier to know what direction to take the business. I am fortunate to have a career that is also my passion.
