Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Merrell.
Emily, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a life long people collector, I felt in person connections were on the decline. I wanted to get people out of their homes, away from their computers and in front of like-minded individuals that would help them grow personally and professionally! Six Degrees Society started as a side hustle while working in the Fashion Industry and evolved into a full-blown passion. Monthly events surrounding career, entrepreneurship and wellness evolved as the organization evolved. We grew to 10 markets across the country meeting women in all industries. The beauty of the organization is that we handpick who you meet while networking. All of the attendees receive the bios of every attendee pre-event as well as the names of the individuals handpicked just for them!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been a wild ride! There have been moments of incredible excitement and success and there have been moments where I’m ready to throw in the towel and wonder why I became an entrepreneur at all! Struggles include launching in new markets, training and losing ambassadors, selling tickets, selling out events, etc.!
Please tell us about Six Degrees Society.
We’re a women’s focused networking organization that focuses in making human connections easier. At each event, we handpick who you meet while networking plus provide visibility to all of the other individuals in the room! I’m proud to have built a community of kind and ambitious humans. I’m super proud to hear the success stories that come out of each connection. From friendships to business connections to work out buddies– so much has happened thanks to connections. We’re different than other organizations in that it welcomes women of all backgrounds. We have businesswomen, entrepreneurs, side-hustlers, moms, and yet when they show up they can be whatever version of themselves they want to be that evening.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I’ve had so many individuals that have helped push me forward and believed in me more than I believed in myself. First and foremost, my mom and my sister! They have been members, ambassadors, mentors — they’ve done it all! I also have a handful of girlfriends that have pushed me along and haven’t let me turn back. They made sure that I continued putting one step in front of another. My husband has also done an amazing job of trusting and believing in me. I’m constantly traveling and all over the place and he has had patience to hear me out, listen to me vent and provide feedback!
Lastly, my team over the years has evolved but been more amazing than the next! From Lindsay to Brittany, Liz and Ashley! There are so many women that make up the heart of Six Degrees Society.
