Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Hooks.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Emily. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Ever since I was a child, I’ve wanted to perform. I didn’t really have a preference or care exactly what in or know how I was going to do it, I just knew in the back of my mind that my dream was performing. Oddly enough, I was a very shy and reserved child who, if you met me, you would not immediately jump to the thought of, “Wow! She’s going to be one to watch for! We’re going to be seeing her face one day!” Honestly… growing up, I didn’t even realize how much I wanted to do it much less that it was going to end up being my career choice. As a kid, I was busy trying everything and just trying to figure out what my “thing” was. Like, where did I belong? What was the “thing” that I was good at and could be mine?
Back in my hometown, the big things were sports and agriculture, mostly. Don’t get me wrong, I tried my hand at as much as I could, but with no luck. Unfortunately, my small town wasn’t entirely the most happening place when it came to performance opportunities.
But time went on, and as I got older I found my first “thing,” music and theatre. And music to me was like magic… and I dreamt one day that I would be able to share my music and the music would show me the world. Over time, I learned how to sing, how to play guitar, ukulele, saxophone, and just enough piano to get by.
College itself was a whirlwind of discoveries, breakdowns, amazing highs, and some low lows, but it was there that I discovered that acting was the love I was waiting for.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ohhh, definitely not. There have been times of unemployment and wondering how I was going to pay my rent next month. Times of crippling anxiety and doubt – thinking I’m not good enough or that I’m not doing enough/am falling behind. And times of incredible loss that my heart was not ready for…
All in all, there were plenty of breakdowns, and to be honest, there still are!
Please tell us about your work.
So, currently, I have my hands in a few different things… Right now, along with being an Actor and continuing my journey there, I am a Personal Trainer at LA Fitness and am working towards launching my own independent training business where we take affordable training outside and get the chance to incorporate different kinds of training such as, bodyweight, HIIT, plyometrics, and calisthenics in an open space environment. Outside of that, one of my latest projects that I’ve been working on for a few weeks now has been creating and launching my new podcast, “Dear You, From Me,” which is officially available on most streaming platforms such as, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and Spotify.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think I would have to say that being “relentless,” and having “hope,” feels most important to my success. Being “relentless” in the sense of never giving up and powering through onto the next opportunity after hearing “no,” for 10 auditions and 5 self-tapes in a row. And having that “hope” be enough to keep you going – in the sense of, despite all of the “no’s” and all the lack of responses, having “hope” that things will work out. That today may not be the day, but hey, tomorrow might be.
