Meet Emily Dear Heart

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Dear Heart.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always loved Fashion and all that came with it. I have worked as a Makeup Artist for the last 12 years. During this part of my career, I was also Modeling. With this, I found myself on sets of all types full time. I decided to start creating my own accessories to bring on set and shoot because I loved creating my own fantasy looks that I knew no one else had.

My pieces started to gain traction within the community because my pieces were unique. I started off designing flashy sunglasses that I hadn’t seen anyone create on the market. When I would be on set, models and Photographers were starting to ask if I sold my products anywhere and would also be willing to style their shoots and then the Dear Heart brand was born! I have always been so inspired by super outlandish campy sunglasses and Fashion. As my Sunglass line was taking off, I found myself searching for outfits to match and I was coming up short so I decided I really wanted to learn how to sew and create entire looks that I could source in house rather than looking to anyone else to create it for me. Being a single mom at the time, I found it next to impossible to go back to school at the time. I have always been so tenacious and decided that wasn’t going to stop me. I bought a sewing machine and after I put my son down to bed at night, I would stay up all night at times learning techniques and practicing sewing and I haven’t stopped learning to this day!

In 2016, I met Brandon McClure and we fell in love and decided to join our forces together. He is a Photographer/ Designer as well and adds his own incredible spin to anything we create together in our pieces. I style shoots for him/ do Makeup and Hair and he shoots his models. When we met, he completely revamped my branding as well. We create pieces that are not for the faint of heart. Our story we tell when designing is bold and fun. We like to say its a little Dirty, a little Sexy and a little Glam. We love playing with textures, bold metals and create entire looks head to toe that Men and Women wear who are unapologetically themselves and don’t like to be in the background!

Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a struggle creating this brand for sure. I always tell myself if I get knocked down nine times, as long as I get up ten thats all that matters! As a single mom when I was starting this, we lived in a small apartment and I had no studio. I literally would make Accessories on my bedroom floor and take care of my son begin a crazy little toddler. I felt at times I was absolutely nuts, leaving my very successful career as a full-time Makeup Artist at M.A.C. I decided I wanted to own my own business rather than work for someone else. I left having benefits, amazing health insurance and a steady paycheck for a mystery future I didn’t know would even work out! I had MANY people copy my branding as well as my Logo. And I mean MANY. Through the years, it’s been a constant fight for these people to stop doing it which has been so frustrating to say the least. I have also had people completely rip off my designs even going so far as copy and pasting my work as theirs and then sending out horrifically cheap and badly constructed products. I have worked so hard through the years as well with no investor as I didn’t want to give up full control over my brand so financially there have been times that I really struggled to find material to work with, find labels, shipping containers, business cards…all that comes with a fully functioning line.

At the end of the day, ALL of the hard times have been worth it. I started this on my own and have grown it with Brandon’s help to something I am so very proud of. We had no help, just us two and looking back at the hard times it makes me so proud of what the line has turned into.

Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
What sets us apart from other companies is that we do it all. We do all of our own Styling, have a very specific and unique way Brandon shoots his models because he creates these little worlds on our sets! We do all in house Makeup, Hair and us being prior models we offer Model Coaching as well. All bases are covered when you step onto our sets. We have countless Models, sometimes first time models who rave about how comfortable and fun our sets are and that they were so scared at first and anxious to shoot and after they say we’ve changed their lives in some way, whether it be making them beige in themselves again or we’ve gotten them on the cover of a magazine they want to be on.

We specialize in Sunglass Design and Fashion. Our style is best described as if Lady Gaga and a Hip-Hop video had a love child. We currently make Jackets, Swimwear, some Lingerie and Body Suits paired with mesh maxi belt Dresses. We also specialize in custom orders. We have tons of clients that come to our Studio in Venice and get fitted with Bandage Dresses and Lingerie that is exact to their measurements, and we also take orders online through the website or my Instagram @emilydearheart. Our line is Bold, Fun and for anyone wanting to make a statement!

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see the industry growing more and more. Fashion never sleeps. It is ever growing and exciting. Its wearable art. I do see more and more companies caring about our planet in different way now. With enormous powerhouses deciding to not use fur anymore, so many Vegan lines coming out and the use of Vegan leather more and more, I see the Industry moving towards more sustainable choices for our planet, the animals and human Fashion that benefits us all.
