Meet Emiliano Rago

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emiliano Rago.

Emiliano, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It took me a while to start doing film… I have a Master’s Degree in Mathematics and worked as IT Engineer for many many years in many different countries and that gave me the possibility to save some money and enroll in the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles, where I studied Cinematography. Since then I wrote, shot and directed many shorts. I am still spending a lot of time in front of the computer as I do color grading too. Actually, all the time passed in doing other jobs gave me a great experience of life and that is something fundamental if you want to tell a good story. In my stories, I like to use paradoxes to explore different and unusual points of view to arise questions about our society and its conventions. Paradoxes is something I probably took from Mathematics…

Has it been a smooth road?
Well, the main obstacle is money. Enroll in a film school in the US requires a lot of money and so it does shooting your first movies. I worked many years to be able to afford that.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Most of all, I like to tell stories but I also like to stay on set and see how other people tell them. I am a Director, a DP and a Colorist. My short “No Country for Old Lizards” (in which I had all of these positions) was selected in many festivals and won few awards. My scientific background helps me a lot in the technical stuffs, and there are many you will run into when shooting a movie.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I like the fact that Los Angeles is a great city where you can find everything you want but not everything is concentrated in a small area so you can live in a decent house instead of a small apartment, do a peaceful life, and then take your car and go to whatever fantastic thing there is in town. On the other hand, you can’t walk in a city like that so it is difficult to end up in an interesting place. Most of the time, you look up on the Internet to choose a place.
