Meet Ellen Kalmenson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ellen Kalmenson.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
An introspective child, art has always given me my own personal space. My creative process is a great comfort to me. Born with a gift for physical expression, by the time I was 16 I was teaching exercise classes in my Mothers fitness studio; ‘The Naked Truth”. It was here, over 30 years ago, I first met pioneer Indian Yoga teacher Bikram Choudhury. A few years later, when reintroduced to Yoga, in a class with Power Yoga’s Brian Kest, I started to open up to the possibilities of Yoga as a way of life. Much like my art, it was creating personal space and Yoga gave me a sense of comfort that regular fitness never did.

I was awarded a Scholarship to Cal State Northridge arts-based program and became exposed to different creative methods, from illustration to sculpting, but it was the allure of the white canvas, acrylic paint and rich layers that made me feel the most satisfied. I also studied the healing art of Eastern medicine Tui na; a hands-on body treatment that uses Chinese martial arts principles in an effort to bring the body into balance. The Art of Wellness is truly my calling; it’s my life work, on and off the canvas.

After many years scaling the corporate ladder without fulfillment and owning Tight Moves a fitness and clothing boutique, I decided to move in a new direction. I’ve always felt that I needed a certain level of maturity to be able to convey onto canvas the sense of peace and calm that you get from a healing touch. The Art Of Wellness ~ canvas art business has given me the gift of incorporating my experience into a productive life dedicated to kindness. For many years my paintings have adorned the walls at many Yogaworks locations, in addition to teaching many styles of Yoga at Yogaworks, California.

At this time I am offering Zoom Yoga Classes, Vinyasa as well as Yin Stretch. Contact for Zoom links:

My paintings are also available as museum quality giclee reproductions on canvas. Connect with Ellen Kalmenson –

Has it been a smooth road?
No, the road has had many bumps.

When I was 16 my first business venture, a fitness clothing boutique burned down. While standing in the middle of the night, it was surreal, sad and difficult to watch. At the same time I felt a strange excitement that a new door was opening.

My belief is that life sends us do-overs. It sends many previous challenges and experiences wrapped up in clever disguises to give me opportunities to learn, change and do-over in a new way. It lead the way to the opening of my Fitness Studio and Boutique.

Please tell us more about your art.

Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience…
Ralph Waldo Emerson
My paintings are inspired by the pace, with a blend of my experience.

I create paintings that I would want to look at many times each day. Paintings that when I look at them, I feel relaxed and that they take me to a place that is a mini getaway within all of the the craziness that is going on, especially right now. My use of light, color and nature help to set the tone and transform your environment.

At this time with many people working from home, so much has changed. has made a new path in our business and has created some easy fix ideas to help transform wellness space or workspaces into a calm environment. One easy fix is an art fabric backdrop that can be used to cover a window and remove the glare for a more professional Zoom meeting.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel that it is a great city for someone who is just starting out. Study from the best, hone your craft and make it your own.
