Today we’d like to introduce you to Elle.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
ELLERALI is a fashion brand with a mission to Recreate The Created by upcycling fabric to help reduce textile waste. My degree is in Marine Biology, working in the field for ten years in conservation, education, and marine mammal training. My mom used to sew a lot when I was younger so a few years ago, she bought me a sewing machine and I learned how to sew. I started off using fabric I found around the house and fell in love with repurposing what we already had. Clothes last a lifetime, and the fashion industry is a leading polluter in our environment. Also, due to the effects of fast fashion, worker exploitation is rampant in the global fashion industry. I wanted to change that.
I was working in Hawai’i when the time came for me to move back home to Los Angeles to help care for my mother who was sick. Fashion Design gave me the flexibility to help care for my family, empower my creative skills, and fulfill my passion in helping to care for our environment. Learning to run a business alone has been the most craziest, rewarding experience. As I’m about to hit my two years with sharing ELLERALI with the public, I’m excited to be part of a new wave of creative designers making an impact towards a more eco-friendly alternative to fashion while looking fresh and feeling good doing it. As our slogan states, “Upcycling never looked so fly.”
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting a business is never a smooth road and I doubt that ELLERALI’s journey will ever be smooth. But oh boy do I know that there will be exciting and rewarding experiences that I will cherish forever through this.
Whew, I feel like I struggle with a lot, especially in the business aspect. How beautiful would it be to just create, to create without pressure, and to create as a living! But in order for ELLERALI to be sustainable, I have to be proficient in the business. As a solopreneur, I am doing every aspect of ELLERALI. From designing, creating, marketing, website design, finances, shows, modeling… oh my. Like I said.. experiences I will cherish forever. So trying to juggle everything together has been a challenge. Also, the upcycling game isn’t easy. I wish it was, so then all fashion designers would do it, but the truth is, it’s very labor intensive and more expensive to be sustainable. It’s also hard to replicate. All my items are one of a kind. So trying to scale has been something I’ve been having a hard time cracking that code.
Right now, I’m just trying to keep up with inventory and keep ELLERALI going. I’m at the point of ELLERALI though where I am starting to understand what I need to focus on and what I need to get help for, and I know that’s very important for growth in a business. In sustainable fashion, we call it, Slow Fashion vs. Fast Fashion. I love being able to share the transparency in creating ELLERALI and the business. My customers appreciate knowing that I do everything, you can watch my creative process on my Instagram stories. But I also appreciate the pace in where I’m moving with ELLERALI. I want to be smart with my choices, I want to learn the business before I make drastic moves. And that just comes with time and trusting your gut. Struggles are meant to happen, but I am resilient and I will overcome. That’s the beauty with going for your dreams.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
ELLERALI is a fashion brand with a mission to Recreate The Created by upcycling fabric to reduce textile waste. I am the one person behind ELLERALI. I design, deconstruct, and recreate all the clothes all while running the business. ELLERALI specializes in comfortable, functional and eco-friendly clothes. Most of our items are gender neutral, multi-functional, reversible and have pockets. We are probably most known for our pockets.
What I’m most proud of is just having the courage to start this company. The hardest part is putting yourself out there and continuing to do so every day. Also, I’m proud of the impact ELLERALI has created for our environment and new designers. All I really want to do is inspire people to do better. And if my story affects you in any way to think more about the clothes you buy, or inspire you to create in any way, or pursue your goals, or step outside and go hiking (btw I love hiking, you should go hiking haha), then I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing.
What sets me apart from others? My name is Elle and I’m ready to rock the fashion industry, ELLERALI style.
What were you like growing up?
Wild, crazy, and so much fun! 🙂
