Meet Elizabeth O’Neil of Variety the Children’s Charity of Southern California

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth O’Neil.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Founded in 1941, Variety the Children’s Charity of Southern California is dedicated to inspiring hope, enriching lives and building a better future for the children of Southern California. We’re one of the leading chapters of Variety International – The Children’s Charity. Variety awards over three-quarters of a million dollars annually to organizations that serve Southern California children in the areas of Health Care, Education and Mobility. Variety is also a major supporter of the Variety Boys and Girls Club of Boyle Heights. The money raised in Southern California stays here in our community – and Variety personally visits every organization it supports to ensure that every donation helps the most amount of children where the need is greatest

Variety’s Mobility Program provides confidence, freedom, and much-needed therapeutic exercise to children with disabilities by providing specially-designed adaptive bikes, strollers and other mobility equipment.

Hundreds of kids with disabilities are riding adaptive bikes for the first time! Variety Sunshine Coaches ensure that kids in underserved areas experience adventures to help them learn and grow – Variety has awarded 232 Sunshine Coaches for SoCal kids.

Variety’s Health Care Program supports organizations that provide safety, help and hope to children who are victims of abuse, neglect and homelessness. Variety sends kids who are battling life-threatening illnesses to summer camp and provides medical care, therapy and early intervention programs for kids with disabilities.

Variety sends hundreds of kids battling illnesses to camp every year.

Variety’s Education Program provides underprivileged children and at-risk youth the programs necessary to pursue their education and dreams and overcome the barriers of poverty and high levels of unemployment with literacy programs, college scholarships, college prep and career readiness counseling.

40 deserving young adults are currently attending college on Variety Scholarships.

We are PROUD that 85 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to help kids.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Fundraising is not always a smooth road. Our key donors are in the entertainment industry which has seen major consolidations over the last decade making it more important than ever to diversify our donor base.

What were you like growing up?
I’m the youngest of ten children from an Irish Catholic family outside of Boston Massachusetts. I learned from my parents the importance of being charitable. Even though we did not have a lot, our house was always open to others who needed a place to stay or a great home cooked meal!

I love cooking, traveling and dogs! 🙂

I live in the South Bay with my German Shepherd, Rubie and my Rottweiler, Alina-Bean.
