Today we’d like to introduce you to Eliza Engle.
Eliza, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been a designer. I started by cutting my own patterns and making clothes at age 8, after my mother taught me how to use her old Singer sewing machine, which I still have. Later I began taking interest in graphic design after taking a class in high school. Of course, graphic design back then was nothing like it is now. There were no computers involved! (I probably shouldn’t admit that for fear of showing my age, but I am proud of it and where my life has taken me.) I went on to get my BFA in graphic design at Louisiana State University and spent several years as a graphic designer and then Art Director for a few ad agencies. This journey led me from Baton Rouge, to Memphis, then back to Miami where I mostly grew up. After some pretty major changes in my personal life, I found myself moving to California. I continued to do graphic design while managing a photography business. I was around some incredible artists at the time who influenced me to expand my design skills into costume design and the interiors world. I found I have a natural ability and passion for this area of design and decided to focus on just interiors going forward. Fast forward 7 years, and here I am with my own successful interiors business!
Has it been a smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road! I started my interior design business when my daughter was two years old, so none of it has been easy. I am a mom first, so I will always have a challenge in prioritizing my life, since I also take my clients’ needs very seriously.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Eliza Engle Interiors – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am proud of my ability to walk into a room and transform it by just moving around what is there and editing or adding a few things. Sometimes you need to completely start over and sometimes you don’t. There is an art in fresh eyes and a sense of design that can reimagine a space without breaking the bank. I take pride in my ability to create projects that look much more expensive than they are, which is most satisfying, because who doesn’t love a fabulous transformation without the scary price tag?!
Eliza Engle Interiors is a very small business. It is generally just me and whoever I hire for a project or a string of projects. I have several contractors and subcontractors I work with when remodeling is involved. For the rest, I have a couple of favorite assistants I like to bring in, one being my fabulous Mom. She and I tend to complete each other’s sentences, and if I’m thinking it, she’s doing it and vice-versa. This method works well because it allows me to operate my business very lean and keep a personal touch on everything. I feel it is important to give each client a feeling of being the only one, and that their needs are considered a priority. I can also afford to take on more moderate and smaller projects that many other designers reject. I believe having access to design services doesn’t need to be out of reach for an average person.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the energy of our city. There is constantly a feeling that something exciting, and maybe unexpected, is about to happen. Los Angeles is the only city I have lived in that I have been eager to get back to after being somewhere on vacation. I also love how easy it is to find almost anything I need here. There is also a lot of manufacturing being done in LA and I love to buy US-made products whenever possible.
As for what I like least – traffic of course! We lived in West Hollywood for 12 years and just recently moved to Burbank. I have less traffic to deal with now, but I still have clients all over the greater LA area, so there is no escaping it! Though I still feel it is a small price to pay for living somewhere I love.
