Meet Elisa Ortega of Stay Chula Wellness in Orange County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elisa Ortega.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I always wanted to help people. I am a great listener and found that people would open up to me easily and trust me with the problems or challenges they were facing. I was a natural and giving advice that helped them look at the situation differently. So I pursued a degree in Psychology. I was fascinated by human behavior and the mind.

After I graduated from Cal State University Long Beach I got a job at a non-profit serving youth 14-22 years old. I loved it. I was a youth counselor and found it so rewarding to be a positive role model in the lives of these young people in the community. I had a great boss who taught me the ropes of working for a non-profit. I quickly worked my way up the non-profit ladder and was not only working with the youth but with the local school districts, the parents and partnering up with other community-based organizations.

After several years of working in the non-profit sector, I felt burnt out. I had been working very long hours and stretching myself too thin. I was working a lot, putting in long hours as an avoidance mechanism. I kept myself so busy as to not listen to my soul. Of course, I didn’t know any of that at the time.

I found myself signing up for a Meditation Class and a Tai Chi/Qigong class at Golden West College with Diana Shakarian as the teacher around 2008. I had no idea what I was signing up for, but the descriptions of the classes tugged at my heart. So there I was at my first Tai Chi/Qigong class and moving in weird slow patterns that the teacher said would develop flexibility, balance, mental clarity and even an abundance of healing energy.

I was like “yeah right,” but there I was returning week after week doing the weird movements. And as the class was coming to a close, I looked back and sure enough realized how calm I was, and I had an awareness with my body that I had never noticed before. So I was hooked. She went on to become my Spiritual Teacher. I have studied with her since then. I learned various styles of mediation, learned about our energy system, the chakras, sound healing, mantras, and got certified to be a Reiki Practitioner. I began to read spiritual and self-development books by leaders in Eastern Philosophy, Spirituality, and New Age Thought Wisdom. I saw her regularly for energy healing.

During that time I cultivated my spiritual practice which allowed me to slow down, see things from a higher perspective and to connect the dots in my life that were out of balance. I know that I wanted to share that passion with others and remind them of the power and wisdom within themselves.

Has it been a smooth road?
Like a lot of Latinas, I grew up in a modestly traditional and religious home. Yet, everything I was reading and learning from the Metaphysical and Spiritual Realm resonated as ‘True’ deep within me. I came to realize that we are spiritual beings having a human experience and that our souls came here for expansion. That expansion comes from the painful & darkest times in our life. It was not easy learning since it was the opposite of what I had learned thus far by society. I had a lot of guilt, anger, and fear to overcome.

I had done everything I was “supposed” to do according to society and everyone else except me. The universe has a way of shaking things up to awaken us and get our attention. I got a divorce, left my job and went on a soul searching journey. This required me to take a hard look in the mirror and take responsibility for my life. It taught me I always have a choice. We all do at all times. Even when I am avoiding and letting the resistance to life get the best of me is a choice. I found God was my true guide via my intuition and connection with the Earth.

If you’re into spirituality, you learn that the journey can be a lonely one. You see and feel things so differently than before your spiritual awakening. You change and grow as you go through healing your old wounds and personal baggage. The people in your life including loved ones may not be “ready” for the new changed YOU.

We are all reflections of each other, and sometimes we don’t like what we see and may not be ready to face it. I distanced myself because I could not openly talk about the energy healing I was doing. It was very painful at first, but that time alone taught me to honor myself and my calling.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Stay Chula Wellness story. Tell us more about the business.
I have been a Certified Reiki Practitioner now for five years. I see clients for one on one Reiki sessions. My Healing and Wellness practice is based in OC, but people come from all over. Depending on the person and my intuitive guidance I incorporate Energy Medicine exercises, crystals, and sound bowls.

I love the method of Reiki because it is gentle, relaxing and non-intrusive for the client. The purpose of a Reiki healing treatment is to increase the body’s energy flow and free any blockages. It helps to restore us on all levels: mental, emotional, physical and spiritual.

I have recently expanded my Reiki Healing Practice to launch a wellness brand, Stay Chula Wellness. Chula in Spanish means lovely/beautiful/precious. My partner and I saw the need to hold space for people to follow their dreams. Stay Chula Wellness coordinates Wellness events, healing circles, and classes focusing on Mind, Body & Soul. I also see clients for Spiritual and Life Coaching.

Stay Chula Wellness also carries essential oils, palo santo, crystals, a spiritual t-shirt line and other “cositas” for your spiritual practice/alter. I want to empower people. I want to remind them of the beauty within them. I want them to know that their soul is perfectly equipped for this journey of self-love.

I want to remind them of the wisdom and power on the other side of their pain. – Wisdom being the information stored in their soul, rather than the knowledge acquired in this lifetime. We are all creators of our reality. Co-creating with the Spirit world is what we came here for and Stay Chula Wellness can help you with that.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
There has been a boom of Reiki practitioners, spirituality/energy healing and wellness. This is a testament of the current climate of the world.

Our individual journey is important, but ultimately we rise together. We are all being called to awaken and rise up, to feel to heal. Let’s keep peeling back the layers to heal the generations before and after us.
