Meet Elin Kraen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elin Kraen.

Elin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started playing violin when I was six. Or wait, My dad has been a musician his whole life and I remember sitting in his lap by the piano singing Isn’t she lovely when I was 4-5. I went to music classes as a teenager and since then I almost gone through all genres, from jazz, soul to electronic, rock and pop. I love to take stuff from different styles and make something new. I started writing music five years ago and in the beginning, it was definitely more weird than it is now.

Today I prefer writing something honest and powerful. I started writing cause I needed to after a bad breakup and I think since then my music has always been some kind of therapy for me, I’m writing about things that are “urgent” in my life, I’ve got Bipolar disorder so my life is in many ways like a rollercoaster, but it also gives me stories to tell in my songs. I started writing on piano but today I write mostly on my guitar. Its like my songwriting is following the different mental phases in my life…

Fun fact: Max Martin is actually my second cousin! 🙂

You’re very lucky to have had such great exposure to music at such a young age! Has it been a smooth road getting to where you are today?
No, It hasn’t been a smooth road. I think that pain and struggle is what gives me my reason to song write. It’s mostly been mental things like angst, depression, self-criticism, bad relationships ending in craziness, etc. I hope that maybe by being open with my own instabilities and struggles in my songs others can relate to that and feel some relief. That would be really cool.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’m mostly a singer-songwriter. I perform as artist, Elin K, with my band around LA. I also do acoustic gigs with my guitars, write to films and commercials and teach a little bit. Writing and being on stage as an artist is the cornerstone in what I do, and what I love the most.

But I’m good at creating catchy or strong melodies in a lot of different genres so songwriting, in general, is important for me. I would say that the combination of a strong voice and honest lyrics and are what defines me as an artist,

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that LA is surrounded by nature: mountains, ocean, and desert. And I love that people come here from all over the world with a lot of dreams and ambitions. I don’t love that the city don’t take care of its homeless people.
