Meet Eli Vazquez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eli Vazquez.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Every step to get me where I am at today came with either chance or pain. The only reason why I started in film was by getting beat up over an iPod and moved to a nicer school with a tv class. The only reason why I decided to pursue my dreams of creating content was after my sister beat cancer. I took a chance on films that pushed the bar and blacklisted me in my film school. I took the chance on heading to LA with just an internship and an inflatable mattress. That all lead to me creating content for BuzzFeed, AT&T, Verizon, speaking at the Sundance Film Festival and creating a social brand that took me around the country while creating 100+ million views across all social platforms. Chance and pain.

Please tell us about your art.
My art is all about giving value to others. I have my filmmaking, my digital scripted/unscripted content creation, and my personal social brand. All of it is about giving value to others. I think as an artist we tend to not want to adhere to the masses but no matter what industry you are in it encompasses one thing; customer service. I create films that reflect POC life told through genre. I am inspired by Attack the Block, Get Out and 90’s children tv shows. To create a fun space where inner-city kids are fighting aliens while holding an essence of social commentary motivates me on a representation level. As far as my social brand it is all about #self-hype. Allowing yourself to think and feel outside the box. Delivering messages of self-love and creating a community of self-reflective positivity. I take all those elements and create content for brands in a digital space.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
Breathing. I feel success is way simpler than people think. We want the money, the fame and all that but waking up is precious. As long as we are breathing we have the chance to do anything and that is what excites me the most.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
