Meet Eileen Settlemyer of Jax of All

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eileen Settlemyer.

Jax of All, LLC was founded by Michael Middleton, Eileen Settlemyer, and Hannah Lascano Middleton in the summer of 2020 during the initial COVID-19 lockdown. We found ourselves in a position where working remotely allowed more time to devote to our hobby, skill, and passion development(including dance, music, and art).

With more free time for hobbies, we realized that doing something purely for the love of it was not being celebrated.

In a hustle and grind world, we saw that people were discouraged from keeping up with what brought them joy due to the pressure of perfectionism.

We want to build a community for people who are dedicated to pursuing their passions while providing resources and support to our community to facilitate and develop skills of lifelong learning.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As first-time business owners, who are all still working full time, we knew going into it that there was going to be a learning curve. The process of registering our business, managing taxes, and learning business logistics was all new to us.

Jax of All at its core is a philosophy of life and articulating a mindset has been a challenge in and of itself. We have big dreams for the business that include community centers, brand partners, and events. We realize we need to grow our following in order to pursue our aspirations, so we are in the first stage of community building.

We’ve been impressed with Jax of All, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Jax of All is a lifestyle brand, in support of the brand we sell merchandise online, write blogs, host online events, create online community, and are developing a podcast. In the future, we also hope to open physical spaces where people can develop skills and connect with others who share their passions.

What sets us apart and what we are most proud of is the mindset of Jax of All. Our business is a reflection of our philosophy both in spirit and in practice. We refer to ourselves as the ‘professional amateurs’ to embody the idea that you do not need to be an expert to execute on your vision. The very act of starting something and continuing to put effort into it is an accomplishment. We value consistency over perfection.

Mission Statement: The mission of the Jax of All, LLC brand is to build a community for people who are dedicated to pursuing their passions while providing resources and support to our community to facilitate and develop skills of lifelong learning.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
The biggest advice is just to start. An idea in your head will never go anywhere if you don’t put action to it. This action can be as simple as asking a friend to be an accountability partner. Learn to feel comfortable starting slowly, and try to be as consistent as you can. Trust the process, it will come together if you keep working on it.

You will make mistakes, give yourself grace when you do. Learn from your mistakes and keep growing. Failure is a necessary prerequisite to success. Fail early, fail often, and fail forward. Progress and success are not linear, moving forward on a plateau will get you to your next peak.

You have to be able to believe in your own idea know when to accept advice and guidance but also when to stand by your vision.
