Today we’d like to introduce you to Eileen and Diny Kim.
Eileen and Diny, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Being active dancers in the dance community, my sister and I dreamt of creating a safe space where we can invite dancers of all styles, races, gender, and levels to come together and grow/train efficiently. In only one year, we have seen so many dancers fall in love with dance, and fall in love with our space. We believe that our careful selection of passionate instructors, our purpose of making students feel cared for and paid attention to, and our own passion for dance to be accessible in our hometown (Koreatown, LA) took a huge part in our growth as a home and as a business. Though we first opened the business with lots of uncertainty & much trial & error, we are so grateful for the love and support our peers, students, & staff has shown us.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Because we are a small business, we started off with a lack of resources – everything from branding, marketing, scheduling, financing, etc. had to be learned from scratch. It was difficult to manage all these different areas with just two people who didn’t have much knowledge in business, but we worked hard to continue thinking of new systems and learn what we need in order to cultivate the business that we wanted ourselves to represent. However, although we’ve had our ups & downs, there is nothing we would have done differently. We believe that every step we took, whether it was considered a failure or a success, took part in building our studio into what it is now. But we are continuously learning, continuously growing, and continuously putting in the effort to better our space so that the experiences our dancers have here can be of aid to their dance journey in the long run.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Urban LA Dance Studio – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
We are a dance studio that offers daily group classes of many diverse styles, including but not limited to: Hip Hop, Jazz Funk, Jazz / Contemporary, House, Chicago Footwork, Whacking, Heels, and Kpop. We are particularly proud of the diversity in style that we provide, and we also believe the fundamental styles we provide are an essential part of dance as a whole. Our main mission is to provide a safe space where students of all levels can feel comfortable stepping into while making sure that they are receiving one on one attention from the instructors so they can grow and train efficiently. We value the relationships between staff and students and would like to continue to provide resources that allow students to cultivate dance into their passion.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are planning to add many more types of resources that can be accessed by students from home or internationally, such as online tutorials, live stream classes through Instagram or other video chatting platforms, private programs, etc.
