Meet Edoardo Achilli

Today we’d like to introduce you to Edoardo Achilli.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Edoardo. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I’d say that is a series of coincidences led me to explore my artistic side. I come from a scientific background. One day I had a change of heart and, after a brief search, I found a school that suited me, the New York Film Academy.

I applied for a short course in Florence, Italy. Here I fell in love with the complicated process that is making a movie, so I moved to the US. I spent one year in NYC, living in Brooklyn, and then I moved to LA to complete my bachelor in fine arts.

In a few months, it will be five years that I moved here in America. I completed my studies almost two years ago. During my studies, my passion for lighting and the work with camera grew more than the interest for the other departments involved in the process of creating a movie.

So now I’m working as a Gaffer, in charge of lighting the movie, and Cinematographer. LA and Hollywood are a complicated world when it comes to working freelance. After more then a year I still building my connections, even if I have a lot of credits on my shoulders and I’ve been interviewed for a couple of articles in Italy.

I’m now trying to put myself in the game of bigger budget movies. I’m trying to aim to a higher level of employment. Overall I’m still at the beginning of my career and there is a long way to go, but I love my job, and I think that soon you’ll see my name on the big screens.

Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest struggles that I’m still facing is to build a solid web of connections that guarantee you a constant flow of work. As now more then a smooth flow it’s a bumpy road.

The work comes but requires a constant search. I’d never expected that I’d have to spend this much time on a computer to find jobs. As I said in the previous answer, I’m now trying to reach a higher level of connections, higher budget movies.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
Well, my company is me. I’m pretty confident in my ability to create beauty through the use of light and camera. The main part of my credits is as Gaffer.

What sets me apart from the others is for sure my background. Science thought me to be intuitive and fast thinking. I feel that my nationality comes with a sense of beauty and charm that is unique. I also focus on really good energy, and I always got along with everyone.

I’m sure that a lot of people in the industry love what they do, but I think that what distinguishes me is that after I tried few other different careers, working in movies is the only one that makes me wake up before the alarm with a smile on my face and make me want to rush on set as soon as I’ve taken care of Cookie, my husky.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Of course, I’d suggest to start here; LA is perfect for the movie industry! Is not for lazy people or shy people. I’m doing good, but I feel that is never enough. There is always someone to look up to.

Besides the homeless situation and the horrible transportation situation, LA is a great city. Really diverse full of stimuli. I feel my mind expanded considerably since I came here.
