Meet Eddie Garza

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eddie Garza.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Eddie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up in the Mexican-American border town of Brownsville, Texas, a region plagued by childhood obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Like many of my childhood peers, I struggled with serious weight problems from an early age, maxing out at 310 pounds by the time I was 21 years old. It was when I transitioned to a plant-based diet that I was able to naturally lose over 150 pounds and reverse my declining health. My latest book, ¡Salud! Vegan Mexican Cookbook features 150 plant-powered recipes that represent the 150 pounds I lost on my vegan journey.

I have cooked for and/or collaborated with a host of celebrities in the television, film and music industries, including television host and model Daisy Fuentes, singer-songwriters Richard Marx and Rob Thomas, Latin American television personalities Marco Antonio Regil, Claudia Lizaldi and Ximena Córdoba, actors Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, Cybill Shepherd, Maria Conchita Alonso, Daniella Monet and Elyfer Torres, among others.

Has it been a smooth road?
My work in the food space has been exciting and varied, and every gig presents different challenges. We recently moved to Los Angeles from Miami, where we often struggled to source certain ingredients that give my Mexican cuisine its sazon (flavor). Thankfully, that’s not an issue in LA. But on the flip side, certain fresh ingredients we had in scores in Miami are not always easy to find on the West Coast. If anyone can tell me where I can find Colombian granadillas I would be so grateful!

Eddie Garza Plant Based Latin Cuisine is a boutique caterer that offers a diverse catalog of cuisines from all over Latin America. In addition to Mexican food, we veganize classics from Central America, South America and the Caribbean. We work closely with clients to curate menus perfectly suited to taste, dietary preference, and event theme, from taqueria-style craft service to gourmet gala and wedding dinners.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles is a vegan mecca. So for that reason alone, it’s absolutely the place for us. My culinary roots hail from Central Mexico and Angelenos truly appreciate our rich, complex flavors.
