Meet East Hollywood Visual Concept Designer: Samantha Del Mar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Del Mar.

Samantha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Born & raised in LA, I have always embraced the culture and diversity of my city. After high school, I attended Cal State LA and my local community college until I couldn’t push aside my creative side anymore and applied to FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in DTLA. I am a recent graduate currently holding a degree in Visual Communications. I’ve interned at places such as LA Magazine and have worked with Proof Creative Group, one of best entertainment marketing agencies in the world. My ultimate career goal is to work in the art department of the film industry as a production designer or art director. My heart lies in film, but I also greatly appreciate all mediums of art, literature, and music.

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been the smoothest road. FIDM, being one of the most respected design schools in the world, has a very catered curriculum towards each major. Because we only met with each class once a week and were working on a 10-week quarter system, there was no margin for error. On top of that, being the “starving student” that I was, I had to work as much as possible to support myself. After graduating and having survived the college, my biggest struggle so far is trying to find a decent entry-level job. Nowadays, it seems like entry-level jobs aren’t so “entry-level” anymore.

What are some of the influences that have played the biggest role in your journey so far?
If I had to pinpoint a group of people that’s played the most significant role in my career it would definitely be my family. At first, my dad and I had our differences in opinions of what my career goals would be, but after he eased up to my creative side, he’s been a huge support. My 13-year-old brother keeps me on my toes and is always inspiring me with a different perspective, and my mom has always supported me no matter what. Aside from my family, my friends have played such a pivotal role in my career. I’m constantly surrounded by creative people and they’re always inspiring me and exposing me to new things, as well as provide unconditional support and love.

Do you have a favorite type of client or project?
Ever since I was a little girl, I always gravitated towards unique visual aspects. Directors like Wes Anderson and Tim Burton who have a very niche work style intrigue me the most and I would love to work for one of them or any client with a compelling vision.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had the chance to start over, the one thing I would have done differently was to go straight to FIDM after high school. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t regret going to Cal State LA and COC— they definitely played a huge role of who I am today, but it would have definitely been more beneficial if I was able to spend more time practicing what I was truly passionate about.
