Today we’d like to introduce you to Dystany Muse.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
This all started in college! I had no idea what major I wanted to declare until I talked to roommate. She said, “I don’t know Dystany, you like to talk, tell people things they don’t know but should know and you like bringing people together for a good time.” I worked to declare a major in journalism but my professor said I had no future in the field and refused to let me into the major.
Fast forward a few years, and I’m currently working full-time in entertainment journalism here in Los Angeles! I love every bit of it! However, I realized I knew a lot of AMAZING people, who I wished knew each other. I decided to throw the first of the networking brunch series only inviting about ten other women… 35 showed up and even a few men! Each person who attended expressed their concern to make sure they could come to the next one and I received so many messages from others wondering why they weren’t invited! This accidental blessing let me know how needed this is for our industry and our city!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not at all! I’m more familiar with breaking news and entertainment news than I am content creation and event hosting. The worst part is that the second brunch was supposed to be mid-April but no one could foresee the COVID-19 quarantine coming! It was so discouraging and a lot to balance with working from home, checking in on friends and family, staying healthy, rest and more. However, I realized that the brunch served its purpose! I had a tribe of amazing people surrounding me who could inspire me and encourage me to keep going and some even without words! Therefore, I decided that while there has been a wrench in the plan, there is much more to do so I have quite a few things up my sleeve!
Please tell us about The NETWork Los Angeles.
The NETWork brings together Angelenos serving in all roles of the entertainment industry, including publicists, artists, producers, directors, actors, dancers, singers, songwriters, models, photographers, stylists, tour managers, talent managers, talent agents, fashion designers, on-air talent, entrepreneurs and more. Based on networking, empowerment and teamwork, The NETWork meets on a recurring quarterly basis with a goal of collaborative effort, career development and peer support. However, I am most proud of everyone else, which is exactly how this came into fruition! I am so proud and inspired by all those I’d met or just heard of and their gritty climbs to the top of their field. The difference you’ll see in The NETWork is the authenticity. It provides a space where everyone can come with needs to fill [or the gift of having the ability to fill a need] and ACTUALLY meet it! We’ve made sure that no one was treated or perceived as more inferior or superior than the other but everyone could bring their own vibe to contribute.
What were you like growing up?
Happily, I’ve always had a good balance between my mom and dad’s personalities. From my dad, I took his socialite nature and spontaneity, while from my mom I took her calculated, careful and cautious approach at life and the curveballs it tends to throw. However, I’ve always known when something was a good fit for me! When I find it, it instantly works out and you can feel the puzzle piece fitting into place. For example, I changed my major in college from legal studies to communication and my grades instantly skyrocketed and I knew it was right for me!
