Meet DTLA Photographer: Frankie Rios

Today we’d like to introduce you to Frankie Rios.

Frankie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started off when I first moved to LA 2 years ago. I needed a way to discover the city so I would document my wonderings on Instagram so my friend back in Texas knew what I was up to. as people started to like more work on IG I invested in my first DSLR and it all really began. I capture a mixture of street, travel and lifestyle portraits.

Has it been a smooth road?
It wasn’t smooth due to me working 10-12 hour work days in another industry. it was hard for me to connect with other creatives as I was always committed to work since that is what really was paying the bills.

When you look back, what are you most proud of?
Being able to travel and meeting cool people in every project I work on. My work also had been reposted on IG by a few brands which is always a feel good feeling when people indeed appreciate your work

Every story has ups and downs. What were some of the downs others might not be aware of?
Struggles happen when I first started off with people not trusting an inexperienced photographer to do shoots. I overcame it by doing high-quality street shoots and people started to approach me to create.

Is there something we can do as a city to improve the outlook for professionals like you?
In LA, everyone is doing the same thing and there are many photographers shooting the same stuff so competition is very hard. But find your own style and don’t be discouraged if someone badly critiques your work you slowly began to set yourself apart.
