Meet Drew Bensen in Seal Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Drew Bensen.

Drew, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a 44-year-old transgender man and a location independent entrepreneur. I was raised in Azusa, CA. I moved to Seattle at 21 and lived there for 19 years. I moved back to California, Long Beach in 2013. I am currently living in a 2017 Winnebago and traveling the US. When not traveling, I call Seal Beach/Long Beach home. I own a dog walking company in Seattle, I am a nation-wide empowerment/inspirational coach and I co-teach the ‘Mind, Body Soul Retreats’ in Orange County. I co-authored a book in 2017 called, Positive Minded People. I am an inspirational and content speaker.

For fun, I travel around connecting with folks to hopefully open hearts and minds bridging the gap between people who may not have the opportunity to know someone who is transgender. I call this my ‘Solo Soul Journey’ and it has been the most rewarding experience of my life.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I am an innately positive person. I also choose to look for the solution or positive in most things or issues. I have trained myself to navigate the world this way. I have been asked if I am bitter or upset that I was born transgender. I feel blessed to have been born ‘me’. If I was born Cis Male (my body in line with my felt gender) I wouldn’t be me I am today. I feel like it is a privilege to know what it’s like to feel the emotions and thoughts of both genders. I understand what it’s like to walk in the body of a girl with long curly blonde hair. To be afraid or have that eerie feeling walking alone on a dark street. I know what it’s like to not be heard by men or adults with my girl presence. I also know what it’s like to be treated differently as a white male. I ‘pass’ you see. what I mean by that is I mostly have to tell folks that I’m transgender. I blend in. I have first hand seen and felt the difference of how I’m treated as a white male. It’s at time wonderful but also confusing. I know the difference. I see it. I experience it. So, what do I do with that? I speak to it. I don’t abuse it, I include and engage the room to gently notice it and hopefully change it.

Please tell us about Drew Bensen.
My Seattle business was started in 2008 and is still thriving today. My empowerment coaching is based on the Infinite Possibilities Program from ‘The Secret’s’ Mike Dooley. I incorporate that teaching along with my own insight to help folks with tools to change their thoughts to step into their bigger life if they so choose. The Coaching courses have been known to create breakthroughs and major life shifts.

Public and inspirational speaking engagements range from transgender awareness, personal storytelling to motivational empowerment. I book out corporate ‘Lunch and Learn events to university classrooms. I speak from the first person and engage my audience in an impactful genuine way. My sole purpose is to engage with folks in our most authentic way to step into our bigger lives together. Please let me know if there is something I can do to support you on your journey.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I’m not sure that I would do anything differently. I feel that I needed to take the time and develop the way I have and on the timeline I have. I feel very fortunate to have the life I have and that I am the person I am. I was once asked by a family member if I was upset to have been born ‘this way’. My answer is I love myself. I love who I am, how I think, how my heart loves, who my soul is. If I were born any other way, I wouldn’t be me. I am an incredible person and I know that I was blessed to be me. I would pick being me all over again if I have given the choice.
