Meet Adria Vey of Draft & Ink Calligraphy Co. in San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adria Vey.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Adria. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always loved art! A trip to a craft store was one of my favorite things to do with my mom as a child (and now I go far too often). I come from a super creative and fun-loving family who taught me that you can do anything you set your mind to. Throughout school, I took part in as many creative classes as I could. Senior year of high school, four of my six classes were electives and some form of art!

I continued doing whatever art I could and naturally fell into modern calligraphy with its popularity booming online. I’ve always loved making fun posters and homemade birthday cards with a handwritten touch. When I moved out of my parent’s house, I bought a chalkboard for my kitchen to write my meal plans onto and this is really where my passion blossomed. My weekly chalkboard art caught the attention of visitors and my sister asked me to create a welcome sign for her destination wedding in 2018. The wedding coordinator let me know I should consider lettering professionally, and it really planted a seed in me! On that same trip, I bought my iPad and Apple Pencil and fell in love with digital art and graphic design.

At the end of 2018, I started prepping to launch my business. Once I thought up a name I felt reflected my mission, I launched my website, Instagram and Etsy. Draft & Ink Calligraphy Company was officially launched in March 2019. I took a total leap of faith in October of last year and quit my 40-hour a week (very boring) office job to run Draft & Ink full-time. My clients are so great and I’ve had the best time creating something special for each and every one of them.

This year, my Etsy shop nearly doubled in sales and I’m really focusing on creating new greeting cards, sticker pages, digital downloads, and home decor items. Fall and Winter of 2019 were my busiest seasons since I started my business, so I’m so excited for this chapter to unfold again!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course, COVID-19 has been a huge struggle for me as it has been for many small businesses and everyone around the world. Personally, I’ve had my times of feeling extremely motivated and creating new products to sell on my Etsy each week. On the other hand, I have felt so completely void of creativity and motivation moving through this time.

I find that when I dive deep into my art and create something I truly love, it’s reflected really well in my sales. When I’m not feeling my best and force myself to create anyways, the product never does as well. I’ve learned that it’s best to take a break when you need one and to never push yourself too far. It’s okay to feel unmotivated, it doesn’t mean you’ve lost your passion.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Draft & Ink Calligraphy Co. – what should we know?
Draft & Ink Calligraphy Co. is a one-stop-shop for all things handwritten! I create a variety of products to sell on my Etsy page, including greeting cards, stickers, mugs, tote bags, cake toppers and more.

In addition to selling products on my Etsy, I create custom pieces for clients near and far. Whether it be a wedding sign, a social media post, or a special gift, anything that needs a little handwritten and handmade touch is my favorite thing to make.

All of my products are currently made in my one bedroom apartment in San Diego. I focus on creating fun, unique, and colorful items that are perfect for a ton of occasions! Every product that I create and sell is crafted in tiny batches or made to order. Having truly handmade and one-of-a-kind products in my shop set me apart from others because I don’t rely on a manufacturer to be able to re-stock.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I grew up in a home with a really supportive family. I was always taught to be self-sufficient and to create a life that I was happy with.

I’m so grateful to my parents for teaching me that I can do anything I set my mind to. I have an extensive background in Customer Service and Admin work and I am able to fully run every aspect of my business on my own, which has taught me some priceless lessons.

I use my upbringing, creativity, past experiences, and google (lol) to help me run my business. I think it’s so important to have this time to run my business alone and look forward to a future when I can hire someone on to help me out with my not-so-favorite tasks!
