Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Monica Kieu.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My path to medicine has been full of detours! Like many of my classmates in college, I changed my major several times, then finally decided I wanted to be an attorney. After graduation, I interned for a federal judge for a few months while I worked on law school applications but soon realized that it just wasn’t a good fit for me. Since both my parents are physicians, I’ve always felt very comfortable in hospitals and clinics, so I thought I’d give the medical school a shot, and have never regretted that decision!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Thus far my biggest struggle has been navigating and succeeding in a male-dominated field. Currently, the male-to-female ratio in medical schools around the US are about 50/50, but there are way fewer women in surgical subspecialties. Throughout my training, I noticed a subtle, unintentional bias in favor of my male peers. I embraced the challenge, and learned to be decisive and confident in my clinical judgments. Now, as a facial plastic surgeon, I see my gender as being a huge positive – the majority of people seeking out cosmetic procedures are female, and therefore I’m able to identify and connect with my patients at a more personal level.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success in the simplest term, is being the person you want to be and achieving the goals that you set forth. Most importantly, it’s a dynamic process, with failures to overcome and relationships to build along the way; these aspects are what give me purpose. One of my favorite quotes is “Success is getting what you want, but happiness is wanting what you get.” – I definitely choose happiness!
