Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Meghan Brewer, PHR/SHRM-CP.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Meghan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
At the early age of 20, I earned my Bachelor’s in Business/Human Resources from Loyola Marymount University (LMU). I quickly began my quest to figure out exactly what I wanted to do with my life post-graduation, so I took various jobs in sales, business, and as a substitute teacher, which ultimately led me back to my alma mater to work in Higher Education.
While working full- time at LMU as a Student Accounts Specialist handling outreach and orientation responsibilities, I decided to go back to school and earn my Master’s in Counseling also from LMU. I later accepted a full-time position at the University of Southern California (USC) as the Assistant Director of Admissions where I earned my Doctorates in Organizational Change and Leadership.
After working several years in higher education with other institutions outside of LMU and USC, including Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. Sac), University of West Los Angeles (UWLA), and Grand Canyon University (GCU), I later changed career paths and began working in Human Resources (HR). As my first HR role, I was blessed to be hired by Target as a Human Resource Manager. I later went on to work for various companies in the HR capacity at McLane Foodservice and the City of Phoenix.
With my combined experience in Higher Education and Human Resources Management, I became extremely knowledgeable on the academic and college admissions process as well as on what employers look for when hiring or promoting employees for various positions.
This combined experience is what lead me to create Destiny College and Career Advising. I believe every individual is destined to fulfill their purpose and I am just blessed that I can be a resource to help individuals accomplish their dreams and goals.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My journey has not been smooth by any means. I have had many setbacks throughout the years. I had a rocky upbringing, I have been laid off from jobs due to budget cuts, fired from jobs due to early faults of my own in my early 20’s, and I have gone through typical heartbreaks and let downs that seem to momentarily paralyze you; however, what I learned through every setback and disappointment is that I only get stronger and wiser. No one knows exactly what to do every moment of their life and when to do it but learning from your mistakes and mishaps, I believe is one of life’s greatest achievements. I have now learned to “roll” with the punches and stay positive because there is ALWAYS light at the end of the tunnel.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Destiny College and Career Advising story. Tell us more about the business.
Destiny College and Career Advising specialize in helping young adults and adults with their college and career goes. We specialize in various aspects under the college and career advising umbrella including but not limited to: help with the college admission process including college selection, deadlines, college applications, essay/personal statement writing, scholarship and resumes, cover letters, and mock interviewing.
What I am most proud of in regards to Destiny is we help our community. We do charge for services but we do not turn people away who want or need the help. We do a lot of pro bono work and discounted work to ensure we are truly making a difference. I believe this is what truly sets us apart from other companies in the industry. Most companies have a set price tag, which is understandable, however Destiny was destined to help people in need and we choose to not let money be the driving force in our mission.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe I am blessed and highly favored. I believe God has supplied all of my luck and great fortune and as long as I keep fulfilling my destined purpose, I believe God will continue to bless me for the word says, faith without works is dead.
