Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Lauren Brim.
Dr. Lauren, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My journey into health care began when I was a Radio City Rockette in NYC. I fractured my L5 vertebrae dancing and was having horrible back spasms and could not find a way to get better. After receiving a BodyTalk session from my friend’s mother that dealt with my emotions, I instantly felt better and went off both of my medications. I took the BodyTalk Fundamentals class the next month, curious how something so simple was able to help my body heal something so challenging, and I never left the health care field. The following year I studied to be a birth doula, six years later I studied to be a midwife, and the year following that I dropped out of midwifery and wrote a book titled, “The New Rules of Sex.” This was the sexual reeducation I wanted to give the world, and I began sexual coaching at that time in addition to the BodyTalk and Cranial Sacral Fascial Therapy I was offering. I went on to get my PhD in human sexuality, and continue to write books and create products that give humans, but particularly women, permission to be sexual beings, and healthy ones at that.
Has it been a smooth road?
Initially, it was a struggle to build my business. I was in my early twenties and practicing this radically different system of health care, and when someone did have a session, they got better so quickly that I was always having to generate a large number of new clients to pay the bills. Practicing this system also meant that I had to grow and heal personally, and the spiritual journey of awakening that followed was painful and challenging for many of those years. When I became a sexologist and wrote my first book, I was faced with just how puritanical and ashamed we are of sex, and to this day I find it difficult to market products and books about sex, like my Adult Play Mat or my makeup line Turned On, because of marketing limitations on things like Facebook, and people’s own desire to stay hidden when it comes to sex. I can get 500 likes on a picture of my daughter, but 12 when I share something that has to do with sex.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My company and website Lauren Brim is a sexual resource center for any women who wants to go deeper into sexual health and pleasure. Through my Youtube channel, books, articles, live speaking events, and individual coaching sessions, I help my clients get access to sexually accurate information that is permissive, validating and erotic. Sexuality is nothing to be ashamed of and connects to every aspect of our health and lives. We like to think it lives on its own somewhere, but if we feel shame about our sexuality, we feel ashamed of who we are at the deepest level. This is why I do the work I do because it is only in healing our relationship to sex that we heal our relationship to ourselves, our creativity, life, money, and relationships. My books are all available on Amazon, and I encourage anyone to check those out if they cannot afford to book an individual session with me. Though ideally, everyone would have access to a session where they can explore who they are sexually in all its detail and complexity.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, I think LA is just as good as any place to talk about sex. There is certainly less religion and therefore more openness here, but I also think that LA is such an expensive place to live compared to what people make that they can’t afford to pay for many of the things they need and want. For this reason, I end up working on the phone with many people outside of the city, and my products mostly get mailed across the country to the midwest and east coast.
