Meet Dr Barb Hughson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr Barb Hughson.

Dr. Hughson, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My career started as a Psychotherapist working in every venue possible in psychology – residential treatment facilities, psychiatric hospitals, private schools, and eventually private practice. I also studied dance extensively – ballet, modern, all forms and concluded my career with a Masters in Dance. I started weaving creative arts therapies into my therapy practice and spent two decades working with couples, families, and children. I then shifted focus into doing work for the Court systems where I continue to spend time offering court parenting courses, parent coaching, and family law mediation. Throughout all of this I offered leadership coaching and consulting. Today I live in the mediation world and I coach leaders of all levels and customize leadership training for businesses. My work with leaders focuses on self-awareness.

Has it been a smooth road?
Overall my journey has been fairly smooth. I learned early on that having just a BA in Psychobiology and Dance required some creative thinking to turn that into a business. I eventually earned three graduate degrees (two Masters and a Doctorate) which all helped raise my level of not only knowledge but credibility and respect. I always knew that working with people was my passion so everything I did through the years and I do now is focused on helping others reach their greatness.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Currently I own and operate two businesses. My leadership work lives at where I offer online courses, trainings, and packages for coaching. I am known for my leadership coaching and am most proud of this piece. I have been able to help leaders of all levels dig into those hard issues that hold them back. Once some of these issues are acknowledged and validated, people experience more growth and passion in their own journeys. This summer I am also offering a virtual teen leadership camp. Leadership starts young and this summer I am taking teens of all ages on a journey through both individual and group project activites to build those skills and abilities. I am also well known for my work as a mediator working with families and helping to literally save children from the conflict of their parents’ divorce. I have seen too many children damaged from parental conflict and animosity so my mission is to be out there saving as many children as I can. My parenting classes, parent coaching, and mediation work are on my site and I work intensely with parents to guide them to more amicable, peaceful, and durable agreements. I am proud of the volume of families I have worked with and how many children who have had positive outcomes because I was able to guide their parents to a place of forgiveness and letting go.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
My work is literally global. Leaders exist everywhere and divorce happens daily around the world. I can do so much of my work via video conferencing that I can be and live anywhere to guide and help leaders and parents through their hard journeys. I can say locally having a presence at networking meetings is always great to feel that personal touchpoint. However, after also being an online instructor at various colleges for over 20 years, my students have lived all over the world and I have been able to build strong online communities. Connecting with others, no matter where they are is something I can do well.
