Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Annie Issagholyan.
Dr. Annie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My chiropractic journey began when I was ten years old. At the time, I was an aspiring dancer who had developed intense leg and foot pain so my mother took me to see a chiropractor and I began the care that changed my life. I remember thinking “how is everyone not doing this?” I didn’t understand why chiropractic wasn’t the first thing people sought out when they had a health issue. After that, I kept up with my care, and I developed a great relationship with my chiropractor, who would later become my mentor as I went through chiropractic school. I received my Bachelors in Biological Science from UC Irvine, and graduated with my Doctorate in Chiropractic from Cleveland Chiropractic College in 2009.
I always knew that I wanted to be a doctor and help people improve their quality of life, much like my first chiropractor had done for me by giving me the adjustments and tools I needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I went back and forth between going to medical or chiropractic school, but my decision was made finally after my father had a critical car accident. I saw how chiropractic saved his life, and he could regain his livelihood. From that moment, I knew that this was the profession I should choose. Six years into starting my business, the practice continues to grow and expand, and I get to do what I love every single day – take care of my patients and educate the community on their health and wellness possibilities.
Has it been a smooth road?
Chiropractic school was incredibly challenging, I lived and breathed chiropractic 24/7. Even if we had a break from studying for exams, we then had to prepare for boards. It wasn’t easy, but I enjoyed it. School was something I always excelled in; however, nobody really teaches you how to start your own business.
Being a business owner has been equally rewarding as it has been challenging. Starting out, I had the knowledge to do the job as the practitioner, but I didn’t have the business savvy. I couldn’t get a business loan due to the student loans I accrued. I borrowed money from family and used whatever savings I had to get started. I even went as far as selling my car to fund the start of opening my own business. I had to sacrifice a lot of the things I wanted in the short term in order to pursue the things I needed to accomplish in the future.
Even after six years, I am continuously learning something new every day. I am always working on improving how I care for my patients by studying and training my craft. Not only am I a Chiropractor but I am also a manager to my staff. Together we work on making the business stronger. We look for different ways to provide more value for our patients and make our office more efficient. When you are running a business there are constantly new obstacles to overcome forcing you to be creative and more flexible. This process is difficult yet humbling, which I believe is an important part of creating success.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Healthwise Chiropractic – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am a Doctor of Chiropractic and my practice is Healthwise Chiropractic, located in the heart of Glendale. I specialize in the detection and correction of subluxation, which is a misalignment of joints in the spine that leads to decreased range of motion and interference of nerve function, among other things.
When most individuals think about chiropractic, they probably associate it with car accident injuries, such as whiplash. While I definitely do help with accident-related injuries, Healthwise Chiropractic is a family practice specializing in corrective care. Most people don’t seek us out because of the pain, they ultimately come in for care because they have a problem that is affecting the way they live their lives. What we do is help our patients not just get control of their health again, but get their lives back. On the first visit, we evaluate our patients then discuss where they would like to see themselves. We provide a natural approach to managing health with specific recommendations of care for each individual and their goals. Some patients want to be able to run a 5k without their knee acting up, or even something as simple as being able to play with their kids. Whatever their goal is, we find the cause of their problem and chart a course for a solution.
Because we are a family practice I have spent countless hours and continue to do so in getting additional training in pediatric chiropractic care. I am also Webster certified and I evaluate and take care of women throughout their pregnancies. Some benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy are management of low back pain and sciatica, higher chances for an easier time during labor and a lesser need for medication during labor.
The thing that most sets us apart from other Chiropractic offices is the fact that we are strictly here to correct the cause of the patient’s problem. We will always do a thorough evaluation along with x-rays. We will always put every effort to find out the cause of the patient’s problem and provide a natural and specific care plan. This allows for better results because we determine the care plan based on the exact issue. Because the main focus of our office is corrective care, we are able to provide a long term correction as opposed to a short term fix.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Glendale is up and coming. There has been a lot of growth in the past few years since opening Healthwise Chiropractic here. It’s a really great area for raising a family, all while getting the “LA feel”. We are very central to everything, so if you want to go to the beach, dinner in Hollywood, or go catch a game at the staples center, it isn’t too difficult to do. Aside from the location, Glendale has a lot of great small businesses as well as larger corporations which provide numerous jobs and opportunities. I grew up in this area so to me, Glendale is home.
